Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965. Hosseini’s mother was a high school teacher in Kabul while his father was a diplomat in the Afghan Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry moved the Hosseini family to Paris in 1976. Due to the Russian invasion of the Soviet Army and the communist coup, the family was granted political asylum in the United States. Consequently, they moved to San Jose, California in September rather than returning to Kabul. In 1984, Hosseini graduates from high school, and he graduates from Santa Clara University with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1988.
