I chose my Biology Professor Danny Najera from Green river College to interview. I chose Dr. Najera because he is a research scientist who is passionate about his work. The first concept we tied into it is segregation in sports by social class. There are some tendencies concerning sports participation by the children in low-income households. First one is they are more likely to engage in physical contact sports like boxing and wrestling, and second one is they engage in sports that require little equipment and financial demand. Given that Manny grew up in poverty that caused his father to eat his dog, those two tendencies make it clear that Manny couldn’t do nothing but choosing boxing rather than playing golf or tennis that he was not able to financially afford. The second and third concepts are social mobility and sports as a mobility escalator.…
As a young boy, he tagged along when his two older brothers played soccer with their friends, unintimidated by the bigger boys. At the age of 8, he was recruited to join the youth system of Newell's Old Boys, a Rosario-based club. Recognizably smaller than most of the kids in his age group, Messi was eventually diagnosed by doctors as suffering from a hormone deficiency that restricted his…
In many sports articles, sportswriters typically portray athletes as flawless individuals, who live the life many of us dream to achieve. Especially the talented adolescents, with their high paying salaries, magazine cover bodies, and public support, which are stressed by the sportswriters truly portrays that athletes have it all. In addition, these positive qualities written about athletes’ drags the reader into further favoring them, like a child reading about his or her favorite superheros who never fail, the air brushed illustration of athlete’s life keeps his or her fan’s attention, while gaining new ones as well. Although these qualities of an athlete can be eye catching, and adoring for the public, sports writers should expose the other side of the athlete’s life too. Since athletes are already celebrated for their talent, exposing the truth of an athlete’s life would bring in common ground with his or her fans.…
Henry Gates Louis in his essay “Delusions of Grandeur,” he analyzes the reason as to why young African Americans tend to take the path of an athlete, over something more realistic. His purpose in writing this is to show the negative effects that can be carried along with the child, if they wrongly believe they will only find success if it is on the field. The intended audience for his essay were adults, the common public, educators, also young African Americans so they can understand that success doesn’t only come with being an athlete. Gates message to the reader is, to make them aware of the causes that may be holding the young African Americans back, and reaching their full potential. Henry Gates Louis, a successful author, historian, and much more, writes about why young African Americans believe that the peak of their success will only be reached by dribbling a ball.…
A very familiar theme continues to hover over Mexico specifically when it refers to the economic woes the political system continues to mismanage. Politicians that simply run for office to help themselves, while screwing the Mexican over time and time again. It is a behavior that has been in place since the Spanish conquistadors took over, by introducing new policies that benefited the white European while physically, morally, economically, and culturally destroying all social progress for the indigenous Mexican. Mexico has always been rich in natural resources, landmarks and culture, but it has always struggled to maintain an economic system where... and once more Mexico found oil, one of its richest sources that could potentially gear…

Prior to this assignment, I believed that I knew a fair deal of information about Yao Ming’s past, being the basketball fan that I am. It was my assumption that he was randomly blessed with extraordinary height and happened to play very well overseas, leading to him being drafted into the NBA. However, Yao’s rise to superstardom is nowhere near as natural as I thought. Brook Larmer’s 2005 biographical exposé, Operation Yao Ming: The Chinese Sports Empire, American Big Business, and the Making of an NBA Superstar, published by Penguin Books, provides incredible insight into Yao Ming’s life, which is more reminiscent of The Truman Show than any typical athlete’s upbringing.…

The person who inspires me the most is soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, he isn't just a normal soccer player to me he is my inspiration and my motivation to never stop trying, never give up, and doing the best I can. This belief is important to me because during my own personal struggles as a kid I looked up to Ronaldo as a role model someone who I could relate to and make a personal connection with. I have come to develop this belief because even with Cristiano's struggles in life he was still able to do what everyone claimed to be impossible, change the way million's of people view the sport of soccer. When I first witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo play soccer I didn't think of him as anything special just another ordinary Portuguese soccer player, but as his talent started to improve so…
