What are the key operational indicators necessary to manage effective services to patients in a medical group practice? All group practices should have a quality improvement committee. What can we do to improve the quality of care, reduce the cost of care and increase patient safety in a medical group practice? What types of risk do we need to manage? Finally, how do we improve patient safety?

There many factors in a medical practice that are necessary to properly and effectively manage patients and patient care. It should be noted that while these can be thought of in separately categories, it is important to realize a failure one part of an office system can have a cascading effect in terms of care and safety. Those would include proper patient identification, accurate medical histories, allergies, and medication being taken. Insuring that are instrument are cleaned with sterile protocols, or one-use items. Insure that information in medical record is accurate and update. Specific follow up mechanisms for studies such labs and radiology etc. Also, systems to ensure that patients are followed up on timely fashions and if appointment is missed the patient is contacted. Also, from a safety standpoint the practice, physician, nurse practice and physician assistants are following evidenced based medical protocols. Cost saving can be achieved in healthcare through many ways. Those would include becoming a patient center medical home, which has been showed to improve patient care and reduce cost. Also, to engage in population health protocols designed to help improve the health of the population and therefore reduce cost. Cost saving can be realized by being enrolled in an HIE system and obtaining information and care carried out outside the practice and eliminating duplicative
