It is assumed that learners entering Foundation phase required to have already been obtained social skills, values and attitudes. However, it was found that some of these learners do not have these aspects and which therefore lead to learning difficulties and a lack of behaviour skills. At any stage of the learner's development, barriers to learning may appear and it is therefore essential that the educators are capable of recognising these barriers. To ensure that the learners do develop to their full potential, the school, as well as other support systems, need to be in a collaborative relationship with the family and the community.

To identify childhood poverty, educators needs to be knowledgeable about poverty as a barrier to learning. Poverty may be one of the largest contributing factors in which the learners might experience an unenthusiastic outlook of the future, have restricted social ranks, experience language inadequacies as well as ill health as a result of living in deprived circumstances. However, it is not an easy task to eliminate poverty at a school level, you need the involvement of the community. Involvement of the community can be the assistance with school feeding programs to better the nutrition of the children which will then leads to better concentration at school. Encouragement of parents to send their children every day to school to benefit out the feeding programme, is of the utmost importance. Educators need to participate in community outreach programs to address poverty for example to try to find sponsorships from local businesses to financially assist the school with school clothes, food, stationary etc., to lift the burden from the poor …show more content…
Educators need to be very cautious not to treat learners different because of their beliefs. The community needs to understand that the learners do interact with other learners with different language and cultures in the school. The community needs to treat everyone with dignity and respect and acknowledge the difference in cultures. The school can in partnership with the community leaders to educate the learners, community members and educators on the difference in cultures. A good example is to do a Culture Day and present the different cultures. Be sure, as an educator, not to treat these learners differently and that your attitudes towards them are correct.
