What is marketing? When most people think of marketing they normally think of the trading and selling of goods and services. Holdford defines marketing as “a process of problem solving, in which marketers attempt to identify and meet the needs of customers.” Marketing is the exchanges of people in which something of value is traded for the purpose of satisfying needs and wants. There are four key elements of marketing: people, value, needs/wants, and exchange. The functions of marketing include selling, researching customer needs and wants, developing strategies, maintaining customer records, delivering products and services, financing, promotion, pricing, and monitoring customer satisfaction. Social trends that pharmacist face today are Consumer-directed health care (CDHC), Aging baby boomers, around the society, improvements in service technology, budgetary constraints, health care innovations, and rising global competition. Consumer- directed health care encourages patient involvement in health care purchasing decisions, this empowers patients to mange their health through disease management, wellness programs, preventative care, and self-monitoring technology.
