This was also a time period in history when the civil rights movement was taking place as well as rights for women. In the 1970’s the relationship betwixt being proficient to counsel those with diverse backgrounds and being ethical was brought out in the open. Counselors were becoming more proficient at counseling those who were diverse from a multicultural area, even though progress was slow throughout the 1990’s. With the advancement of the basics of proficiencies and requirements through the development of new codes counselors became more conscious of multicultural differences. The 2014 American Counseling Association (ACA) made changes to their ethical code to include key components for counselors to become more proficient in counseling clients from multicultural environments. One area of focus is importance of the counselor being aware of their own individual beliefs, ideologies and values so that they can keep their opinions from being projected onto the client.
