Kewauna and Marita are both ambitious, they didn’t want to conform to the stereotype, they want to show that kids from poverty can be successful just like someone from a high class home. Both girls wanted to prove that they were better where they came from. Kewauna went the extra mile to make sure that she stayed on top of her work, she made sure that she collaborated with all of her professors. “She was always contacting her professors whenever she wasn't clear on an assignment.” (p.4) Marita's mother forces her to take breaks most nights. She didn't want to let her mother know that she couldn't handle KIPP, she pushed through it! Marita wanted to take advantage of her education. “She worked just as hard as a lawyer trying to make a partner, or of a medical resident.” (p.13) Kewauna and Marita as well attended extremely strict schools, Kewauna attended OneGoal and Marita attended KIPPs. “Three years out of highschool, 66 percent of the students who enrolled in the program as high school …show more content…
Marita went to KIPP academy where most students were African American, the rest were Hispanic. It was one of the poorest schools in New York. “Roughly half of the students are African American; the rest are Hispanic.” (p.3) Kewauna attended college, she was the only African American girl to sit in the front row with all the white girls. “The other African American students all tended to sit at the back, which disappointed Kewauna.” (p.3) Marita started working towards her success at a younger age.
