The next contemporary artist is Kiki Smith. Smith is popular for creating nude prints and sculptures of men and women, but specifically representing women as figures for reproduction, menstruation, and motherhood. Her sculptures revolve around feminine work and explore the physical aspects of the women’s body. In her sculpture Train, made from wax, a woman stands in a small room with red beads flowing out of her vagina. The red beads stand out in the sculpture, because they create a trail behind the woman to symbolize blood and menstruation.…
Have you ever wondered why the modern world is so unequal? Why the United States is so technologically advanced while places like Papua New Guinea and places in Africa still rely on a hunter-gatherer way of life? Jared Diamond contemplates these questions through his exploration of geographic luck and evaluation of the first development of guns, germs, and steel. Among the various contributors to the initial progression of growing nations (and guns, germs, and steel) include: the cultivation of wheat, smallpox and malaria resistance, general continent shape and location, as well as the development of writing. Cultivation of wheat led those in the fertile crescent to surpass others who didn’t have the advantage of hearty grain to keep them…
Overall I found this book very interesting. It covered a vast majority of topics and was very eye-opening on a lot of issues. Most of these issues happened in the past, but they clearly have affected education throughout the years and will affect education in the future. Many topics are controversial and it is very important to be educated on these so that as educators we can deal with them as they arise. This book did a wonderful job with addressing a lot of those issues, and made myself question if the world could ever go back to the segregated ways it once was.…
The report I chose was retrieved from ABC News and written by reporter Dennis Romero, addressing the heartbreaking shooting of an unarmed African American male name Stephon Clark who lived in Sacramento, California. This tragedy initiated a large protest by the Black Lives Matter movement in the Sacramento area. It affected the local community and an event in the community all day on a Thursday, March 22, 2018. The local community the protestors affected were five expressed highways. Protestors of the community held signs, wanting justice for Stephon Clark.…
Throughout history, women have fought for gender equality economically, socially, and opportunity wise. Women have tried to show that, in a multitude of occasions, females are just as capable of being successful and heroic like their male counterparts. The book The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, demonstrates feminist literary criticism by portraying women as property and puppets of men. The book, about a boy and his father who undergo obstacles after the destruction of civilization show through Feminist Criticism, the lowest form of feminist criticism. Thus, allowing us to see how male-dominated the book is and how minimal women were portrayed.…
For the most part, I enjoyed reading Bitch Planet, since the story focused mostly on women and these women were strong, yet at the same time criminals. The dystopian world the book takes place in was a very interesting concept too, being that women are basically treated as slaves to men, and the women we get to learn more about have gone against this in some way. Even the crimes committed by the women were trivial, for example Alika’s crime was labeled as “disrespect.” Basically, every woman on Bitch Planet was simply there because they did not mold into their societal standards, and thus this made them noncompliant and forced to be sent to prison. One pivotal scene is hilariously labeled “The Obligatory Shower Scene” where the women are…
The study of Native American history, culture and customs indicates what has made Americans diverse, but also what makes us the same. Native involvement in the Americas is set apart by coercive and once in a while willing endeavors at assimilation into standard European American society. Starting with missions and paving the way to governmentally controlled schools the point was to instruct Native people so they could return to their communities and encourage the acclimatization process. Overall survival of indigenous stories and lifestyles that oppose colonization form a part Native identities through the despotism of European ideals. “This Is History” by Beth Brant (Mohawk) was one of the readings that was most impactful to me.…
The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
“I would say that I’ve been lucky. Being blessed and not really ever giving up,” said Kenneth Edmonds. Luck is something I also appear to have. I never thought I would live to see this day. I’ve always lived in a bad neighborhood and been an ill person.…
Five In-Class Writings After reading the essays and having discussions in class, my favorite essay has been David Sedaris “A Plague of Tics”. In the excerpt, Sedaris uses a humorous tone when writing because the subject of disability makes people uncomfortable. Sedaris takes the audience through a series of examples of his obsessive compulsive behavior.…
In Chicana Power by Maylei Blackwell the chapter “Spinning the Record: Historical Writing and Righting” talks about feminism and how different people have defined it and how it's been seen throughout history. I think it is the significant take away from this chapter because it's something that it's not really taught or discussed but should be. It is broken into different wave models although the author does bring up a good point about it being divided in this way. She says many challenge the dominant narrative of periodization embodied by the wave model because we need to consider that women of color feminists are different from each other. I think it's hard topic to teach specially since many neglect somethings and there is many opinions to…
My Final Thoughts These are my final thoughts on English 101. I believe people never stop learning and this class is a prime example of it. This class helped me in more ways than one. It helped me with punctuation, comma use and expanded my vocabulary. It has pushed me to think and analyze things in different point of views.…
Feminist Criticism Essay Feminist literature criticism is the analyses of stories mostly through the female’s perspective, and their own feminist theories of how women are portray. Through feminist literature women find that they are depicted as being inferior to men, having less power, having no say, being weaker, and there is a lot of inequality between males and females. Two stories that displays these negative look on women are The Story of an Hour and Trifles. In The Story of an Hour we learn about a women who feel like she is incarcerated in her own home, and does not have freedom because of her husband.…
Frailty, thy name is woman”- Hamlet The above quote from hamlet clearly states the position of women in a patriarchal society. Woman are considered physically and morally weak. They are considered as beings of less intelligence and have lesser understanding of the world. According to (Z., 2011) , studies related to heroines of any play are somewhat underrated, even though the plot is strengthened due to female characters.…
