Kevin Mitnick was a curious kid growing up in California when he discovered a way to ride the bus in the whole greater L.A. area for free. He was able to accomplish this task by using nothing more than his own ingenuity. According to Jason Gots of the “Big Think” website “He (Kevin) used social engineering on a Los Angeles area bus driver, telling him he needed a special hole punch for a school project. The driver helpfully directed him to the public transportation supply store, where he could buy the special punch needed for transfer passes. 15 bucks from his mom for the punch, a little dumpster-diving at the bus depot for unused transfers, and Mitnick was able to ride the LA bus system anytime for free.” (Gots) This was the beginning of a

Later into Mitnick’s preteens, he graduated to more serious infractions. He applied all he previous skills to a new crime known as phone phreaking. Phone phreaking as defined by TechTerms.com states “a slang term that describes the action of experimenting with or manipulating a telephone system, in order to make long-distance phone calls at a discounted rate or totally free.” (TechTerms.com) Kevin, again using only his ingenuity was able to seize control of Pacific Bell telephone company. It was this deed that got him recognition from the FBI. In 1993, after the heat from his phone phreaking scandal became too hot, Mitnick decided it was time to take his skills on the road. With the FBI doing their best to track him, he was seemingly able to stay one step ahead. This was done so by Mitnick’s ability to wiretap the FBI special agents that were tasked with apprehending him. He set up a pre-warning system that notified him of any movement made by the agents.
