Kevin Day: A Short Story

Improved Essays
The fluffy, pristine white sheep prances on a vibrant green background, their little black faces lifting upwards and the shimmering grass swaying by their small feet. While Kevin Day proudly wears his favorite printed sheep tie to work at All Saints’ Day School, he emulates a shepherd as he leads by example and practices what he preaches to both his students and his peers. Not only does he speak in church, but Mr. Day also preaches and teaches through the way he lives his life. As both a history and religion teacher, Day tries to “spread the word of the gospel, but not necessarily using words.”

Despite being a relatively new citizen of Carmel, Day is known throughout the peninsula for his voracious appetite for learning, unquenchable need

“He pours his heart and all of his effort into every class he teaches, every student he works with, and every rap he writes,” says fellow All Saints’ teacher Mrs. Sara Brown, who has worked closely with Day and has seen him inspire his students to let their actions speak louder than their words. This canon is a common thread running through Day’s life: he wants to live his life with honesty and honor.

The enthusiastic humanities teacher reflects, “it’s so easy to just preach lofty ideals and then act a different way, but true value is found when you follow through with your words.”

It is this very same attitude that led to Day helping the ill at Community Hospital Of Monterey Peninsula in Monterey every Sunday. He decided to assist at the hospital because of the type of community he saw on the Monterey

    Edwin And Phyllis Summary

There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a premier organization of high school students in the United States that was established to recognize excellence in students. But more than just being an honor roll, The National Honor Society serves to encourage students to go beyond academics and excel in the areas of leadership, community service, and character building. To become a member, one must exemplify the four pillars of the National Honor Society, which are character, leadership, scholarship, and service. I truly believe that I demonstrate all of these traits.…

Both Baxter and Witmer, in their books “The Reformed Pastor”,” The Shepherd Leader”, argue about how to be a good leader in a biblical way for Maturate Pastoral Ministry. While Baxter describes from his own point of view, Witmer harmonizes with Baxter including other points. Firstly, in this essay, we will be comparing and contrast, Timothy Witmer’s framework for leadership with his “old shepherd friend” Richard Baxter in The Reformed Pastor (1657) Secondly, we are going to Evaluate Witmer’s framework for leadership in which extant is biblical, practical and relevant to my personal context. Finally, there will be a Self-assess of my personal leadership in the church and home against this (modified) framework, with explaining strength and…

The author starts by stating that humanities are the center of understanding the human condition, which should not be a luxury. The human condition is not a luxury because they are necessary for existence (Smith 48). The author also equates humanities to poetry, which helps translate hopes and dreams of survival into language ideas and then actions (Smith 48). The writer’s main idea is to convince the reader that humanities are a necessity in the education system and persuade them to stop discrediting humanities as valueless. Her argument arises from the comments made by several scholars who viewed humanities as expensive and not yielding any fruits for the institutions.…

Imagine living in a fantasy world where everything is pitch perfect the way you wanted to be, but then, you wake up to the harsh reality to feel trapped and animated on the inside. This is how I first view my life story for the last three years. At first, I never thought this class would help me realize who I am nor what I have to value until eight weeks ago. To start off, I have looked at my life in a new light and sees how I should understand others before I judge them, as well as, to understand the importance of morals and values. Everyone has their own values and morals that they believe in to determine what is right and wrong in life, so have I. Not everyone can agree to the same stuff about how one’s should live our life, but instead learn from our value and believe to make our own story in our life.…

Within Lionel Shriver's epistolary novel "We Need To Talk About Kevin," the narrator Eva attempts to analyze the events leading up to "Thursday" -- the day her son Kevin committed a mass shooting. In doing so, Shriver evaluates the concept of the school shooter. In popular media, the persona of the school shooter is culminated though a series of broad, mutual concerns about adolescent life in contemporary America. However, conversely, in "We Need to Talk About Kevin," Kevin is shown to attempt to build the persona individually. Essentially, while the shooting is situated within a larger cultural discourse, he does so on what he believes to be his own terms.…

As we’ve studied the different types of educational philosophies in class, I’ve been able to see which category my beliefs fall into and where that puts me in the teaching world. Throughout my educational career, my family and teachers have shaped my philosophy into a combination of both romanticism and progressivism. As a teacher I want to be able to help a student strive for self-fulfillment while focusing on individual student’s learning processes. Based on my ideals, I want for my classroom to be a place where my students can go to learn in a way that suits their personality, and in a non-pressured environment. I want to be able to engage my students and challenge them to learn based on their interests.…
