Hip hop in Senegal arrived in the 1980s via France. Some of the rappers were DJ Awadi and Deegutee. They were in a group called Black Soul. They were rapping in French and Wolof, their native language. French was the language that the Senegal people learned in schools and spoke in the workforce but Wolof was spoken at home. Senegal is one of the most democratic countries in Western Africa and has a long history of freedom of speech. In 2000, the youth helped elect a new president by the name of Abdoulaye Wade. Wade promised many things but he did not follow through with his promises. Thus he was subject to criticism, criticism via rap music.
