Ketogenic diet contains high fats, adequate amount of proteins and low concentration of carbohydrates. It produces ketones in the body which are used as an energy source. It is called ketogenic food as it produces ketones bodies (ketosis). Normally glucose molecule is used as a fuel for energy production but ketogenic food have large amount of fats in it so liver converts fats into fatty acid and ketone bodies. Ketone molecules energy source but brain can run only on glucose and ketone bodies, so ketogenic food can also treat epilepsy.
Ketogenic diet plan:
A ketogenic diet plan requires tracking the carbohydrate amounts in the foods eaten and reducing carbohydrate intake to about …show more content…
The nutrient intake on a ketogenic diet typically works out to about 70-75% of calories from fat, 20-25 % from protein and 5-10% from carbohydrate on daily basis when calories are not restricted.
In ketogenic diet proteins concentration should be kept low than fats because proteins affect blood sugar and insulin. High protein intake initiates gluconeogenesis which raises blood sugar level and it also spike blood insulin temporarily. High level of insulin interfere the production of ketone bodies.
Ranges of macronutrients and their total amount in grams for ketogenic diet is given in following …show more content…
It is the cause of many metabolic diseases. It is found that about 2.8 million adults die from obesity related diseases each year. Intake of ketogenic diet is a way to get rid of obesity. Here are some features of ketogenic diet to reduce body weight.
1. Higher protein intake has many weight loss benefits.
2. Limiting carb intake limits food options. This can noticeably reduces calorie intake and this increases fat loss.
3. Ketogenic diet feels you full. This is due to positive changes in hunger hormones, including leptin and ghrelin.
4. Some studies suggest that ketogenic diet reduces lipogenesis ( process of conversion of sugar into fats)
5. Ketogenic diet increases fat burning.
Cancer:
Cancer cells are not normal cells; they are less differentiated cells that lack mitochondrion for production of energy by aerobic respiration. These cells use glucose and proteins for energy. Thus increase amount of glucose and protein will promote their growth. Ketogenic diet can kill cancer cells by producing ketone bodies as energy source, which are not used by cancer cells and thus reduce their
