Ketoacidosis is most generally witnessed in type one diabetes mellitus, and is often the first sign of the illness (McCance & Huether, 2014). It is triggered by a critical absence of insulin and with the lack of insulin the body starts breaking down fat. What was reported that the 58- year -old homeless man has long standing insulin treated type two diabetes and has been diagnosed with a lower extremity cellulitis. This is what most likely precipitated the ketosis. Why would an infection cause ketoacidosis? When fat is being broken down it releases ketones. This was caused by the cellulitis inhibiting the hormone production of insulin (Costanzo, L.S. (2013). Therefore, ketoacidosis occurs due to fatty acids being changed to ketones in the liver.
