Ketamine is a phencyclidine derivative (anesthetic used in veterinary medicine), noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist. The chemical structure of ketamine, 2- (o-chlorophenyl) -2- (methylamino) -cyclohexanonehydrochloride, a arylcycloalkylamine which is structurally related to phencyclidine (PCP) and cyclohexamine. Ketamine binds non-competitive against a phencyclidine receptors bound N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). Ketamine inhibit or interfere with the sensory input to the central higher than the central nervous system, as well as inhibiting the activation of NMDA receptors by glutamate, reducing the release of glutamate in presynaptic and enhance the effects of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA.
