Kenya Christmas Story

Decent Essays
When you talk to your teacher do you try to keep eye contact? Well in Kenya that’s considered rude, I know crazy right! This was just one of the challenges Irene had to face when moving to the U.S. One of Irene's favorite best childhood memories was christmas. In Kenya christmas is all about family coming together. It goes from the 20th of December to the 2nd of January. Some traditions on christmas time are getting new dresses and drinking a lot of soda. She lived in a solid brick building sort of like an apartment here in America. According to Irene it was a very loud household with usually around 10 kids on the house at a time. She had two brothers and 2 sisters, so the other kids in her house were her cousins.

I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas” (Calvin Coolidge). To some people, Christmas Spirit means to be jolly, giving, and praising, but to the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Christmas Spirit is split into three forms: Past, Present, and Future. These spirits come to show Scrooge what his life was like, is like, and will be like without Christmas Spirit. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come plays the main part in transforming Scrooge into a joyful, spirited man by convincing him to live a better life, fulfilling the lessons taught by the other Spirits, and inspiring him to have more…

On Monday, during the third period, I observed a read-aloud lesson. After the teacher wrote the title of the book, she called the students over to the meeting area. Prior to the read aloud, the teacher set strict expectations for the students. For instance, the teacher advised the students that they had to remain seated “Criss-Crossed Applesauce” and raised their hands if they had a question or a comment about the reading. Otherwise, they had to sit calm and quiet.…

In the case of Eastern Germany, the culture is also large-power-distance oriented. As our text states, in large-power-distance countries, teachers are more authoritarian and they and their knowledge should be treated with utmost respect. In the movie "Mrs. Ratcliffe's Revolution" the teachers are portrayed as having control over their class and being completely in charge of all their students. For example, when Alex expresses her opinion about which type of art she considers to be the best, she is met with harsh criticism from her art teacher. Furthermore, when a child misbehaves in a large-power-distance-countries, the main reason for teachers to meet with the parents is to make the parents ‘set their child straight.'…

The purpose of this observation is to observe and evaluate the human matters of sentiments, behaviors, standards and relationships between teachers and students within the classroom. When I first walk into the classroom it felt dreary due to the whole classroom having dark stained wood paneling on all walls, dark wooden tables and desks. The teacher tried to brighten up with classroom by displaying photos of the children’s family members, birthday calendar displaying all the children’s upcoming birthdays, word wall, student’s names, along with educational posters and art…
