Kentucky Social Issue

Part 1: What is the political and social impact slavery has on Kentucky in the mid-1800s? During the mid-1800s, the country was divided by slavery. The Southern economy relied on slavery, while the northern economy had no use for it. Since the Northern economy had no use for slaves, many wanted to abolish it. This slave debate caused a turmoil within Kentucky, a state that would be added to the Union. Politics divide nations. There are few moments in which a group of people can all agree on something. Slavery was an issue that greatly divided. When it mixed with politics it made things even more difficult. One of the biggest problems was when new states were added. Kansas was one of the major states torn due to this debate. In document three, Axalla John Hoole discusses how southerners moved to Kansas in order to make it a slave state. This was not uncommon at the time. Many people in the south were scared of slavery being abolished, and in order to stop this, they would move to states that were being added in order to change the vote in favor of slavery. Document four is a speech to the Senate in regards to the slavery issue in Kentucky. He discusses how slavery taints the soon-to-be state, and should not be allowed in the state. The debate did not stop at just political problems. Due to their opposing views, people from the north and south had difficulty getting along.
