Kentucky Derby: Traditions, Legends, And Icons

The Kentucky Derby first started in 1872 and has continued to go on with thousands of viewers. About 160,000 people travel from around the world just to watch the Kentucky Derby. Millions of people that can't go to watch in person watch on television. The Kentucky Derby Has traditions, legends, and icons. Aristides and his rider, Oliver Lewis, crossed the finish line on May 17,1875 during the first ever Kentucky Derby. Fifteen horses competed in the race. The Derby contestants are limited to three year old horses. The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuous sporting event in the United States. It is known as "the most exciting two minutes in sports."
