The National Guard was hit by the students' rocks, so in turn they forcefully used their shields against the students. The National Guard ordered the students to walk in groups of three people or less. However the students disobeyed this new command and joined into one big group. The National Guard responded by throwing tear gas at the students. The students, having had this happened on multiple occasions before, threw the canisters back at the National Guard.

It is still unclear to this day if there was an order given via radio to fire at the students, but the National Guard did open fire on the students. The students ran but there was nothing they could do. The soldiers shot their rifles at the students armed only with rocks. The National Guard killed four and injured a total of nine
