A campus rally broke out in Kent, Ohio at Kent State University protesting the war. Many people were angered by the news that the US would be sending troops to fight in Cambodia (Filo, 2006). They saw no good in sending men into an out of country war. Some of who were angered included college students studying at Kent State. The beginning of the protests began where many other students were known to give speeches which was known as the Commons. Printed sheets telling about the rally had the saying "President Nixon's actions had murdered the Constitution and made a mockery of his claim to represent law and order." During the protest they also buried a print of the Constitution (Burgan, 2017).

Many American were raged by the government and National Guard (Lang, 2014). People who should’ve been protected under the first amendment that says one can assemble and protest, but these students were brutally killed. One of the outraged was singer Neil Young; who wrote the song "Ohio" for the victims. Another aid to the media was by John Filo witnessed this tragic event with the aid of his camera. His pictures captured the true sadness after the shooting. Filo captured Mary Ann Vecchio filled with sorrow next to Jeffrey Miller, who was some 300 feet from the troops but shot dead. Filo's picture held significance when it hit the public as it showed a student kneeling one of the dead rather than just the protests and National Guard.
