In “Lead Contamination in Flint - An Abject Failure to Protect Public Health” David Bellinger examines the impact Flint’s contaminated water has and will continue to have on its population, primarily the children. In 2014, executives from the Flint Water Treatment Plant decided to use the Flint River as the main source of water instead of Lake Huron as a “cost saving measure.” The river is polluted with lead from older, now defunct industrial factories which specialized in products that contain harmful byproducts. One of the water-purifying agents used in the Flint River is ferric chloride which has an effect on naturally occurring bio-matter in water, increased corrosiveness.…
The current event, I chose to write about is a case that happened in 1992, however, the case now has a suspect in custody. In April of 1992 in Westfield Massachusetts, a woman named Lisa Ziegert was discovered murdered in a wooded area. Ziegert was working late at the Agawam card and gift store where she went missing, her body was discovered four days later in a nearby area. The report states that she was raped and stabbed. Ziegert was twenty- four years old the year she was murdered; her case will not have a suspect in custody until twenty-five years later.…

ICM met with Mr. Fundenberg at Roosevelt Darby center located at 802 N. Broad Street to assist him with the intake process to obtain shelter housing. During this encounter, Mr. Fundenberg shared his frustrations with his housing situation. He stated that it's "messed up that after working all of these years I don’t have a place to stay". He continued on stating that “I can't deal with the smells in shelters. If it’s not up to par I'm not staying".…
physician and patient to be performed at an ASC. Plaintiff’s Motion, p. 17, 21-22 To get to this interpretation, Dr. Newman argues that the phrase “under applicable Medicare regulations” in the definition of “outpatient surgical procedures” somehow refers to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual (which is not even a Medicare “regulation”). Specifically, Dr. Newman cites to Section 20.1 of Chapter 14 of the Medicare Processing Manual, which provides: “The ASC list of covered procedures merely indicates procedures which are covered and paid for if performed in the ASC setting. It does not require the covered surgical procedures to be performed only in ASCs.…
On August 1981, an officer by the name of Cyril Raumbach and other officers of the Burbank, California Police Department carried out a month long narcotic investigation of Alberto Leon and Ricardo Del Castillo, their residences, and a condominium upon receiving a tip claiming they were trafficking narcotics. The officers observed activities generally consistent with the informant's information, and conducted background checks on Leon and Del Castillo. Officer Raumbach, an experienced narcotic officer, concluded the condominium was being used as a stash spot to store large amounts of narcotics and then in small amounts the narcotics would be transported to the residences for distribution. Officer Raumbach consulted with other narcotic officers and wrote a…
In Woburn, Massachusetts, a water contamination was believed to take the innocent lives of six family’s children that developed Leukemia. Donna Robbins and Anne Anderson were the moms of 2 of the victims, and with the help of other worried residents in the area, they formed a group ‘For A Cleaner Environment’. Jan Schlichtmann an attorney, had heard about the issue, and initially refused to tackle the case. Schlictmann states,”A dead plaintiff is rarely worth as much as a living, but the death is long, slow, and agonizing death, the value can rise.” (1) Not long after, Schlichtmann found himself pulled over for a speeding ticket, that coincidentally overlooked the companies waste of toxic chemicals into a lake.…
Marie, had to conduct some additional research. Edwards Richards from the University of Louisiana Law Center, highlights an interesting point: “MCOs are legally considered insurance companies, however, and they have McCarron-Ferguson immunity from federal antitrust laws. [15 U.S.C. § 1011 (1996). ] They cannot be sued for most antitrust activities” (Richards, 2009)…

Juvenile crime is overwhelming throughout the country and most states have enacted laws allowing convicted juveniles to be tried as an adult and sentenced to death for serious crimes. This case addresses the issue of whether sentencing a youth to death for a crime he or she committed during the age of sixteen and seventeen is cruel and unusual punishment in violation On evening of January 7, 1981, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Kevin Stanford, age 17 years and 4 months committed the murder of Barbel Poore. When Flint decided to stop buying Detroit’s water and switch to new water, they had no idea what was in store. Soon, every Flint civilian was exposed to Lead. Lead can affect children’s brain development, education attainment, and impair the body. Increasing Lead amount in Flint’s water can cause permanent issues in the town members’ health. Flint’s government is at fault here, and it needs to take charge before things get worse.…
In the article “ Americas Real Crime Element: Lead” by Kevin Drum published in Mother Jones magazine, the author gives possible reasons behind crime rates in the 1990’s. Drum introduces many theories, to later discredit them through evidence. Such evidence leads him to the real reason behind violent crimes. The evidence presented by Drum makes his argument credible to most, including parents of young children. Parents with young children have many fears.…
Flint, one of the largest cities in Michigan, has been recently in news for its very high lead concentration in drinking water. The problem started when the city temporarily changed its water source as a cost saving measure. Lead in Flint’s municipal water came from the old lead pipes, which reacted with highly corrosive Flint River water in the absence of proper treatment measures. Lead concentration in Flint water is found to be so high that it can be easily considered as hazardous waste. Although, the residents of Flint were complaining about their water from the very beginning, neither the local and the state government nor the EPA considered that as a problem.…

As most of America is aware of by now, there is a grave injustice happening in Flint, Michigan. The city’s drinking water is heavily contaminated with lead and has been since 2014. The problem began when the city of Flint switched to using the Flint River as a source of drinking water. A month after the switch was made, residents began to “complain about the smell and color of the new water, which [was] 70 percent harder than its previous water source” (Kennedy, 2016). Despite the complaints, no action was taken.…
