Review 1: Ken Davis, How to Speak to Youth and Keep them Awake at the Same Time (Zondervan, 1996).
SUMMARY
In How to Speak to Youth, Ken Davis shares pearls of wisdom about communicating to modern youth. The keys to his presentations are “planning, practice, care and dependence on God.” He shares three truths about communicating effectively: “Very Hard Work”, “Learning”, and “Passion.” Preparation to communicate includes “preaching with the example”, knowing your audience, avoid imitation of other speakers, commit to God’s glory and not your own exaltation. Davis proposes the SCORRE method to plan a speech: Choose a Subject, define a Central theme, set an Objective, identify a Rationale (what is the point of your message?), add Resources (frosting to the cake), and Evaluation (check your speech again). SCORRE is a preparation method, but not a delivery model—the foundation of a speech “building.” Davis also emphasizes the investment of time and preparation for a speech and to let it “ferment” as an aged wine. We are not called to make converts, not to teach apologetics to large crowds exclusively, not to entertain the masses. Davis is right to emphasize that “coaching beats playing” and that our “long-term success is determined more by your work on the sidelines than by your spectacular plays as a speaker in front of a group.” How true! May we never become the type of apologist without time to counsel our young, to spend time with them in everyday life. Discipleship only happens as we spend time with our mentor and as we spend time with our own disciples. That is the model Jesus used, so it can’t be wrong! We may adapt our message to the culture but never compromise the truth or forget that the truth of the gospel will fall on fertile soil when we are trusted, credible, and people realize we care sincerely about them. No amount of apologetic arguments or stellar preaching will change

Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

Graham’s evangelistic career had just begun when he was asked to speak at a Youth for Christ rally. Critical Analysis: All in all, Craddock presents solid arguments with supporting evidence for his claims. He does a magnificent job at presenting and analyzing the observations of Kierkegaard and finds the answer to how we can communicate the Christian faith to another or effect a new hearing of the word to those who have been exposed to the word to the point of ad nauseam (Craddocck, 2002). He succeeds at unraveling Kierkegaard 's method of indirect discourse and rediscovered something, “that a perceptive thinker saw lying very close to the way things are and ought to be and he has offered it to us with contemporary challenge and promise” (Cox, 1979, p. 440). Even though, the author never presents any sort of statistical analysis to support the claim proposed in his argument, the sermons at the end of the book and his life’s work and role in narrative preaching (new homiletic) serve as evidence of his influence (Lorensen, 2013). Integration of Key Concepts into Field of Communication: Indirect communication is not solely limited to teachers and preachers; rather, is applicable to different types of areas of communication (Craddocck, 2002).…

Most people would agree that there is a need for educational improvements in America, particularly at the high school level. Both “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood” by Leon Botstein and “A Model for High Schools” by David Broder acknowledge weaknesses in the American high schools today. Although both authors propose valid improvements, Botstein has the better proposal for the two. Botstein claims high schools are obsolete and should be abolished because they are unorthodox.…

The 18-year-old Ryerson University student is seated directly in front of Mayor John Tory and a committee of his hand-picked executive members on this mild May day. A freeze, direction endorsed by Tory and his allies, would make it harder to access social services and to break the cycle of poverty, Peterson says.…

    • If you are selecting a single text, its single proposition must relate to either as capital text (Single sentences, or even clauses of the Scripture, setting forth transcendent truths so that it can receive the exclusive treatment of a whole sermon) or epitome text (where a single proposition contains the point of whole discussion, the oral of a whole parable or history summed up for us by the Holy Spirit Himself.) Overall, preaching must always be expository (explaining) because it is the only legitimate end of preaching, convey the whole message of God to the people. However, the single text must not be driven by the sermon, but the text should determine the character of the sermon.…

Because of this, the readings in this course prompted several conversations between myself and my boys.…

What lessons did you learn… About the ministry? One of the main goals for Dave for this project is to have a resource that will create a smooth transition between the children and the youth program. It was challenging at times to work on the leveling the different activities within the TEAM Manual, but as I was doing this, it was interesting to use what I have been learning in the Spiritual Formation class about different developmental stages to help direct some of the things that I was unsure about. It can be difficult to make generalizations knowing that all children are different, but I think overall I was able to come up with levels that will work for most children and youth and help with the transition between the two.…
