Ken Bain's Helping Hand

Helping Hand
Ken Bain’s book was a very interesting book. Before going to college, I didn’t know what to expect from college, but reading this book has to help me in ways that showed me what to expect from college. This book showed me how to focus on my grades, how to follow my curiosity, how to become a “deep learner”. I did enjoy Bain’s advice on how we should enjoy college and get an experience. Doing this project with my classmates is an educational journey for us because we can all learn from what we do for the community. In my perspective, this project is an experience and beneficial to both parties. Last semester Bain’s taught us that what where one does in their life should have a purpose and potential. Meaning that one should

I think that when one talks to the elder, they become happy because they will feel that they being recognized for their life successes and they have passed on to us. Honestly, one point or another we all will become of the stage that these people are and yet we tend to think that our life is gone be different. In truth, we need to learn from these people, hear their stories, and make them feel special because many of them don’t get attention which is very sad. Being with the elder reminds us that we are not going to be young forever and we should start to think about how to be successful in life while we still are young because the time isn’t going to stop moving. It’s also great that these people hold knowledge and wisdom and it's unimaginable what one can learn from them and the advice that one can get. I am very happy that we are doing this project. I never had the chance the meet both of my grandfathers because they died. I also have never met my grandmothers because they are far away from me so I never had this relationship with grandparents. I love being with elders because I know they are wise and they are so much better than the people that are my age. I love hearing their stories, getting advice, helping them, and being there for them. In conclusion, this project is perfect for me and my classmates because now I can have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to have grandparents. I cannot

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

At my high school, the different backgrounds and upbringing were limited. At Pierce College, the demographic of students is rich in diversity. Pierce College’ student body is a diverse pool of people ranging from traditional college students with students of different backgrounds including foreign exchange and running start students. Many of the veterans and non-traditional students attending Pierce College have used their college experience to expand their horizon. I’ve been fortunate to interact with much of the student body through my job as the Issues & Awareness Coordinator at Pierce.…

The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. Although Bain’s book does a very good job of explaining all of these values, the one that stands out to me is that of discovery. Discovery stands out because in order to learn you must find/discover something new every day in order to be the best learner that you can be. Stories that Exemplify Discovery…

In the words of Shannon L. Alder, “Your perspective of life comes from the cage you were held captive in.” In other words, Alder is saying that the way you view the world is based on the way you grew up. Many aspects that impact the way you see the world include: your family, religion, parents, gender, role in the family, etc. A cultural lens is the way you see life and the world around you. It is what you were taught by your parents/guardians as you were growing up, and it is what decides who you will be and what you will do.…

I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life.…

Aiza Nageeb A Fish Story Not everything in life is crystal clear; sometimes we need to dig deeper to find the true meaning behind a particular idea/thing. In the case study, "A Fish Story" a college professor is trying to teach his students a lesson by making them observe a small fish on a white plate. For three days in a row, the professor assigns the students the same assignment and as the days progress, the students find new results. The first day the students notice basic physical characteristics about the fish, like its size and the color of the plate it rests on. The second day the students use a book to find out about the type of fish it is, and the third day they dig deeper and observe minuscule details; like its weight, position of the mouth and texture.…

The summer after my sophomore year, my church youth group flew to Boston for our annual mission trip. I had never been to Boston, let alone the east coast, so this trip extraordinarily unique. To this day, I vividly remember boarding at the Wallaston Station each morning of that week hearing the phenomenal accent that all true Bostonians possess.. To spend my next four years at BU would put me back in that same city that holds such fond memories of mine, from cheering on the Sox at Fenway Park, to making fresh PB&Js for the homeless at Boston Common. This city exposed me to culture I had never witnessed before, and at BU I can expect much more.…

Both concepts however promote active and healthy aging. Older adults with better social network experience better emotional, mental and physical health; those who guide and nuture the younger generation derive satisfaction and motivation which also enhances the aging process. Both concepts are also useful in understanding grandparenting today as they underline the approaches and styles of grandparenting. Transition to grandparenthood now occur in midlife resulting in variation in age of grandparents, grandparenting approach and motive although it has been reported that the prime significance of grandparenting is biological renewal and/or continuity and emotional self fulfillment (Hooyman & Kiyak, p.361). While younger grandparents tend to use the involved or authoritative style of grandparenting, older grandparents use the remote and individualized…

Parents Everyone has a symbol of what they want or need in life, and how it has come to symbolize everything that they want, as well as what it represents, in that hand my symbol and something that means so much to me will have to be my parents. To me my parents represent happiness, protection, and ambition. Parents in general are the closest human beings that we will ever have. Parents don’t just love and care for us just because we are intelligent, or have a nice haircut, but because we are what we are- their children. To me, my parents represent love.…
