Kelsey Timmerman's Views On Globalization

Globalization can be considered a way that the world is advancing or it can be considered one of the downfalls of the world’s economy. Globalization can help people get out of poverty and help companies thrive, but on the contrary, can hurt them because of poor working conditions in the factories. Kelsey Timmerman’s view on globalization's negative impacts caused him to want to become an informed consumer and go on a trip around the world to meet the people being affected by globalization. Kelsey Timmerman’s view on globalization has vastly changed through his experiences in Bangladesh with Arifa, in China with Dewan Zhu Chun, and in Cambodia with Nari and Ai. In this factory he meets two girls, Nari and Ai. They live are from a small village called Kompong Cham which is a five hour bus ride from their job site which costs three dollars each way. In Cambodia, the working hours in the factories are again awful. Because of this, the workers are, again, not allowed ample time to visit their families very often. The workers get paid about fifty dollars a month for their work, but like Nari and Ai, they send some of their money home to their families to help them survive. Because most of the money the workers make is sent back home to their families, the six dollar, round trip bus ticket is expensive relative to what they make. From Timmerman’s experiences with Nari and Ai, he learns that globalization helps people support their family, but also sometimes affects their ability to visit their family. This can be both a positive and negative thing. The positive is that the workers now their family isn’t suffering terribly but the negative is that they haven’t seen them in so long they might forget about the people they are even sending this money
