Kelly's Existential Theory Paper

Kelly is a 17-year old female, who suffers from server anxiety and panic disorder. She gets bullied a great deal in school and doesn’t fit in with her other peers. Little do they know that Kelly’s real name used to be Kevin. Kevin revealed to his mom at the age of 15 that he was gay and enjoyed dressing up a woman. He decided that he no longer wanted to live his life as a man at the age of 16 and started to do research on transitioning from male to female. Kevin’s mom supported his decision to start the process to becoming a woman and also paid for his medical procedure and hormone treatment. There are many young men and women in today’s society who have difficulties dealing with their birth gender. Some believe that they were born the wrong gender and want to live their lives with the gender they feel the most comfortable in. Existential theory focuses on the spiritual being of the individual while, getting them in touch with their inner self. It is about accepting one’s lifestyle even if you may disagree with them. It is also about standing one’s ground and having that confidence to face challenges head on instead of giving up. Whether it’s poetry, pictures, drawings, or writing they all could help by uplift, motivate, inspire, and find relevance in one’s life. The bridging the gap activity can help people gain a better understanding and look at things from another perspective. It teaches us not to judge or make an assumption about things we’re not knowledgeable about and help us to grow as a culture. This could be a great icebreaker for Kelly to not only introduce herself to the world as transgender but to inform others about a lifestyle that some do not accept. Once she understands herself worth it may not matter to her what others think about her. She may even get more support or some may not even care about how she choose to live her life. Not everyone is judgmental and will accept you for who you are no matter what. This could be done by having people draw what they think they know about the transgender community on one side of a piece of paper. Then after they learn more, then draw what they know now about the culture with a better outlook.
I feel like no matter what form of expressive arts a person may use, they are all a reflection of one’s inner growth and development. In life, we all should continue to keep re-evaluating ourselves and find fulfillment in our lives regardless of what’s going on in the world around us. Though we may not agree with
