The quote “Character is what you are in the dark” by Dwight Lyman Moody can be interpreted as you are yourself when no one is watching or dark and troubled times can bring out the real you. I support this quote and interpretation because, people often hide themselves from others in fear that they will either be judged or misunderstood. This quote also infers when someone is going through a rough time period in their life and you see them at a point in their life which people now call “someone at their worst”. The worst is the dark part of it and they are stuck in the middle. Also, the quote can infer that someone is more smart at night time.…

I don’t wear flannels, have dyed hair, or have a favorite obscure band. At first glance, there is little about my appearance to suggest that I am a nonconformist. Yet, I have always strived to stand up for what I believe is right, even if it meant straying from the crowd. I have my own thoughts, values, and passions, and throughout high school they have at times come into direct contrast with the typical students’ beliefs.…

When someone is standing up for themselves that means people can make their own choices to please themselves because all their success and strength lies within themselves, but they have to make the choice to use it or not by speaking out about their beliefs. Therefore people can shape their own path when they chose to stand up. People usually do things when it pleases others, but they should do something because it makes them happy. This idea can impact the lives of others in a positive way, whether or not others are happy with their decisions. I am Malala and Fahrenheit 451 tells how much standing up for whatever they believe in, even though people may disagree, can make a positive difference in others lives.…

The feeling of standing up for someone is an amazing feeling. So stand up for what you believe in and you will see how amazing it feels afterwards. Everyday I see people wanting to stand up for something, but don’t do it. People get so scared because they don’t want someone to judge them or lose someone they care about. I had stood up for my sister Hannah when “rumors” were going around about her.…

Similarly to Harrison, a couple of people I know felt they needed to stand up for what they believed in. Many people don’t stand up for what they believe in because of fear. While everyone else was afraid to rebel and stand up for what they thought was right, Harrison, who was just fourteen years old, was able to escape from jail.…

The short story Cathedral, written by Raymond Carver, is a story displaying a consequential distinction between ‘looking’ and ‘seeing’. The tale is that of a man and his wife who take in a blind man into their home for a night after the death of the blind man’s wife. The wife had once worked for the blind man and they developed a strong friendship. It goes on speaking about how the husband is a tad uncomfortable and bewildered, by the reality that the blind man is being brought into his home. The story then goes on to portray irony because the husband himself, is the one who is blind.…

The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

It took years of higher education to teach me that people speaking out is a good thing, even if the topic is not something I personally believe in or condone. When you are truly educated on a topic you learn to look at ideas from all different perspectives, this practice will either strengthen your personal beliefs or challenge you to think differently about a topic.
