Keller and Brodsky
While reading the case I couldn’t help but to reminisce my struggles 2 years ago in my last role at P&G. In my previous job, my manager and I didn’t start with a good footing and while literatures say that first impressions last, it was indeed. Henceforth everything that I do was wrong from his perspective. And If I do things right he doesn’t not recognize it. As a boss, there was no question about his ability to get things done, but as a leader, he just lacks the competency to establish a connection with me. Firstly I’d like to approach it by highlighting the theory of Pygmallion effect whereby the leaders perception about his follower will turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy (Wikipedia). That said since Keller had no good perceptions for Brodsky, to him everything that he will do is wrong or inadequate. The second theory that I would like to use to analyze their relationship is the Leadership Management Exchange(LMX). This theory states that leaders create two groups an in-group and out-group of followers. An in-group is equivalent to your inner circle which are given more responsibilities while out-group is just keeping the relationship to professional level(Leader-Member Exchange Theory: Another Perspective on the Leadership Process, Fred C Lunenburg). In this specific instance Keller has placed Brodsky on the Out-group while Zelenko as an example is placed in an inner group. As I mentioned in the previous page, Zelenko is considered part of the inner group so he is favored. As explicitly mentioned in the case Keller and Zelenko had developed a social relationship. Zelenko has worked with him in the food processing company where he came from so they already know each other and maybe the fact that they’re both young and MBA holders have made them easy to connect to each other on a personal level. The personal relationship then made Keller ask for more than as he did for others. Since he has good connection with Keller he has been preferred as well by several middle
