Keke: A Short Story

Improved Essays
The sun had dripped highlights into Keke's long and wavy ocean hair. The Hawaii sun had left her with a golden glow, and her eleven-year-old skin looked delightfully youthful. Living on the island of Oahu for all eleven years of her life, Keke had accomplished what many women pay for, an evenly tanned golden body. Occasionally a grass skirt was in order, but only for the hula dances. However, for the rest of her time Keke's wardrobe consisted of her bikini and bare feet. She had naked toes, with an absence of nail polish. Her feet had a few scars on them from the coral reef incident she had the last time she attempted surfing. Her legs also hosted a variety of marks, mostly around her knees.
Keke was a tomboy, though she loved to dance too.

She pretended she didn't want to, but could never suppress her hunger for adventure. Sitting up on the top of that tree, she could relax, and listen to the music of the ocean. The glitter of the water provided a spectacle for her to watch. Upon her climb downwards she would lie to the boys about horrible smells above. She wanted to secure that one spot for herself.
Keke had a very strong sense of sound, and was impressively good at listening to things and appreciating all kinds of noises. The ukelele was one of Keke's favorite sounds because she greatly enjoyed listening to music. She looked up to her older brother Arden because he was able to play it with ease. He would listen to Arden as he played on their hammock, right on the family's porch.
The porch was her family's gathering area. All of the events involving their family occurred there. It was where they ate dinner, celebrated birthdays and spent their free time. Her house was made out of wood and was very charming. It had windows through out the house, and wind chimes hanging outside from the roof. The house was on the beach, and this is why Keke enjoyed the ocean so fully. Keke's family was very tight, and played an essential role in her everyday life. She was the only girl other than her mom in the family, but she liked it that

We can all admit that at some point in our crazy and busy life, we have taken the time to look back and ponder on our childhood, our childhood dreams, the endless things we could do and not get punished for it, and the constant need to seek for adventure. But as an adult looking back, we don’t stop here, we continue to ponder and think about the importance of this event, the safety, and the ability to be able to accomplish it at such a young age. This passage from Sarah Orne Jewett’s “A White Heron,” takes us back down to memory lane and uses Sylvia’s climb to the top of the monumental pine tree to see the ocean as a metaphorical image to us, as adults, being able to achieve our wildest dreams for the future. This passage perfectly displays the danger, excitement and the “I did it” feeling by using a distinct narrative pace, a third person omniscient point of view, denoting diction, and imagery.…
