Keivlar Essay

When Kevlar is spun, the resulting fiber has a tensile strength of about 3,620 MPa,[13] and a relative density of 1.44. The polymer owes its high strength to the many inter-chain bonds. These inter-molecular hydrogen bonds form between the carbonyl groups and NH centers. Additional strength is derived from aromatic stacking interactions between adjacent strands. These interactions have a greater influence on Kevlar than the van der Waals interactions and chain length that typically influence the properties of other synthetic polymers and fibers such as Dyneema. The presence of salts and certain other impurities, especially calcium, could interfere with the strand interactions and care is taken to avoid inclusion in its production. Kevlar's structure consists of relatively rigid molecules which tend to form mostly planar sheet-like structures rather like silk protein. …show more content…
The result has liquid-crystalline behavior, and mechanical drawing orients the polymer chains in the fiber's direction. Hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) was the solvent initially used for the polymerization, but for safety reasons, DuPont replaced it by a solution of N-methyl-pyrrolidone and calcium chloride. As this process had been patented by Akzo (see above) in the production of Twaron, a patent war ensued.Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide – branded Kevlar – was invented by Polish-American chemist Stephanie Kwolek while working for DuPont,[6] in anticipation of a gasoline shortage. In 1964, her group began searching for a new lightweight strong fiber to use for light but strong tires.[6] The polymers she had been working with at the time, poly-p-phenylene-terephthalate and polybenzamide,[7] formed liquid crystal while in solution, something unique to those polymers at the

(Boy, that makes sense, doesn't it - given that polymers are made by hooking up one molecule after another after another after another.....) For example, look at polypropylene (sounds like polly-pro-pill-een): Its backbone chain is made up of just two carbon atoms repeated over and over again. One carbon atom has two hydrogen atoms attached to it, and the other carbon atom has one hydrogen atom and one pendant methyl group (CH3). (What's a pendant group?…

After a successful joint tour, these two teams decided to mix the disco-funk with more aggressive sounds and integrate the hardcore singer Nic Offer from the The Yah Mos. The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens' Khoisan language were represented as "!". However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. "…

High-Grade Biopol is extremely suitable for medical applications which require contact with the body. Due to its biocompatibility, the body doesn’t react to the polymer, thus it is suitable as a material for band aids, needles, or surgical pins which are inserted into the human body during surgery. As well as biocompatibility, Biopol’s biodegradability allows it to decompose naturally, allowing the human body to decompose the polymer naturally and safely, without the use of surgery. Biopol is used in medical applications including woven patches, which protects skin tissues from scarring after surgery or injuries. After the wound is healed, the enzymes eventually dissolve away the patch as it is made of Biopol.…

From the beginning of recorded history, there have been many different ways to prepare food. From cavemen eating raw flesh to modern restaurant standards, food preparation has advanced in many ways. The laws of kashrut compose a diet called kosher. Although some see this as an expensive or time-consuming tradition, there are benefits to this way of life. The practice of a kosher diet has a positive effect on the community for many reasons, including the availability of jobs, the care of the product, which could prevent illness, and a sense of civic pride due to the ritual slaughter of the animal.…

Cervical pillows are a common recommendation by doctors, for those who want to prevent neck pain caused by poor sleeping postures. While the reasons for neck pain many be many, such as degenerative diseases, stress or poor posture, one of the ways of giving the neck some relief is by using a cervical pillow to take the load off the neck muscles. This gives neck muscles a chance to recover while we sleep, often easing the pain and eliminating it completely.…

It helps pinpoint the adequate time necessary to obtain the best yield and minimize the process cost. Figure 1 shows the acid value profile of Sn(Oct)2 catalyzed synthesis of PRA. As the reaction progressed, the hydroxyl group of one monomer reacted with carboxylic group of another monomer to form oligomer and then the chain was lengthened to polymer.…

    T. Heinze et. al. reported the synthesis of new 6-deoxy-6-pheylethylamino cellulose derivatives with DSamino 0.4-0.6 by nucleophilic displacement of cellulose tosylates (DSTos 0.74 and 1.29) with a racemic mixture of 1-phenylethylamine under homogeneous conditions, in DMF/H2O82, scheme 30. The optical properties of these deoxyamino cellulose derivatives was studied. A regioselective synthesis of 6-amino-6-deoxycellulose, 6-N-sulfonated, and 6-N-carboxymethylated deoxycellulose were described by C.
