Not everything stays the same over time. The once adorable baby animal that was in that cage grew up and their behavior changed with them. They may know their owner very well but that does not mean that they will not attack. Tanmay Tikekar best states it here: “wild animals have highly developed predatory instincts that cannot be wiped out very easily; they don't belong in your house, just as much as you don't belong in their jungle” (Tikekar). Another factor that ties into why they have a distinct behavior is because there is a thousand year evolution gap between domesticated animals and wild animals. Given that evolution gap, wild animals evolved to fend for themselves and they had certain features to them in order to help them survive in their wild habitat. If they are captured and trained to act like the domesticated animal that they are not, it would defeat their whole purpose of why they were made and what they were meant to do within their own environment. The Humane Society explains why evolution plays a key role in why exotic animals are unsuitable for being pets: “Wild animals are not domesticated simply by being captive born or hand-raised. Wild animals, by nature, are self-sufficient and fare best without our interference. The instinctive behavior of these animals makes them unsuitable as pets” (Humane Society 2009). This leads to another point needing to be made. …show more content…
Even though previously stated, captive breeding has its positives and its negatives. According to Zuzana Kuzol “Captive breeding eliminates the pressure on wild populations, and also serves as a backup in case the animals go extinct” (USA TODAY). Animals are kept for commercial purposes as well and would be in a facility where they could get proper care but it still wouldn’t compare to the care they could provide to themselves in their natural habitat.
In conclusion, keeping exotic animals as pets should not be allowed in order to prevent harm to the owners through disease, the animals through lack of space and the feeling of captivity and also harm to the environment through population and the food chain. Exotic animals were made to be dependent on their predatory instincts and do not require the care of a human in order to survive, they were made to be independent and allowing them to survive without interference would be the best option in order for optimal survival to take
