Relationships are based on the trust we have on our partner, the equality we have between ourselves and the way we communicate. Having a traditional relationship means that men have dominance. Nowadays, this no longer exist in majority of the households. Relationships are molded based on how well one understands the other. Not being able to communicate can cause barriers in expressing one’s feelings. The essential to have a healthy relationship, is trust. Trust is to believe in one’s decision and it is not to doubt the other person. Through the short story “Keeping Company”, Kemp Claire conveys that Dennis and James have a better relationship than William and Nora. “Gender roles”, where men have dominance can potentially ruin their relationship. Nora and William have a very traditional relationship. Nora does the house work, cooks and cleans. “I hang the wash, Williams work shirt, dish cloths and towels.” William goes to work: he helps with the finical issues. As a married couple, they are excepting their first child. William is known to have dominance over Nora throughout the story. From the beginning of the story, he wakes her up to make him breakfast “William wakes me with water…You’ll be late for work, “I tell him and run inside to make eggs, soft boiled on white toast. “William only cares about if his dinner was made, and the chores are done “William signs when he looks at me though I’m a chore he must complete. William forces his thoughts on Nora., he expects her to be who he wants her to be. “I don’t want you over there: Is that clear?” Unlike James and Denise, he doesn’t take her pregnancy very serious, but as a burden “Nora, I swear, you’re as big as a house. Denise and James cooperate “While James chops the vegetables, his hand on the knife making quick, precise cuts, Dennis copies the recipes in his spidery script on a card for me to take home.” James and Dennis treat her as a lady, and take her pregnancy very seriouly . they call her prehancy an unwrapped present”….” William is careless of her condition, he thinks of her as if she’s getting fat. Whether it’s the man having dominance or there is equality between themselves, a marriage would last if that satisfies
