Similarly, ‘My last Duchess’ by Robert Browning explores villainy through the jealousy and norms of the Duke. Through dramatic monologue, we learn about his late wife and get a close reading that mentions his last duchess in his self-important speech. Browning uses the dramatic monologue to show us the controlling, jealous, and arrogant traits that the duke possesses, without mentioning them; this allows the reader to question his norms and values. The duke seems to be talking to someone and tells the history of his relationship with the duchess. He looks at the grand picture of his late wife “looking as though she is alive”. Readers are left to suspect that the duchess is no longer alive and has no importance to the duke; he speaks of the …show more content…
Readers are left with disgust as the Duke portrays such pride as he boasts proudly of killing his wife. In contrast, the Victorian (1837–1901) audience would see the Dukes irrational murder of his wife as reasonable; As women were expected to obey and respect their husband as they were ‘property’. With the Duke claiming that he was not treated with respect and that the Duchess had an affair ,readers would agree with her death as women were expected to have sex with only one man and with the male being the breadwinner, women were expected to serve their husband needs emotionally(attending their interest) and physically(taking care of appearance).Robert Browning wrote 'My last Duchess ' to show the clash between art and morality .The poem criticises the Victorian era as it explores social hierarchies, loss of faith and patriarchal values. ‘My Last Duchess ‘reveals that the power and wealth in the Victorian Era exist in people of aristocracy. "My Last Duchess" explicitly portrays the emotions and thoughts of the Duke of Ferrara. As it is set in a private art gallery in the palace of the Duke of Ferrara and depicts a devastating self-portrait of royalty that exhibits more of the Duke's personality than Ferrara intends. The poem also reveals the inner thoughts of the Duke Of Ferrara through the form of monologue. In the poem there are elements of jealousy as the portrait of the Duchess was made by Fra Pandolf; a monk who emphasises that he once was a religious and chaste man.…

The history of this situation followed with Duke Alfonso courted another young lady, whom he eventually married. “My Last Duchess” is a monologue style of poem that happened during the time of the Duke negotiation for courtship of a new wife. Although there were no characters’ name mentioned in the work, one can figured the implication from the Duke’s actions and expressions. Context plays a significant role in portraying values of the composer triggered by time and place. ‘Sonnets from the Portuguese’ (1845) by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is a reflection of her personal experiences in the context of the Victorian era’s gender issues and female expectation in a Petrarchan form. Similarly F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ (1926) centres of the failure and tragedy of the American dream in the Roaring 20's. Both texts explore the positive and negative effects of idealised love and time through numerous literary techniques. Even though the text share similar themes their interpretation completely differ influenced by diverse historical context and human values.…

Robert Browning has written the poem in the strict form of an iambic pentameter which was common in traditional, classic, English poetry, suggesting not only that the Duke was very orderly and formal even when addressing lower ranked individuals in private, but also hints at his controlling nature. However, the frequent use of enjambment and parenthesis “(since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you, but I)”, and a metaphor “as if she ranked my gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name”, suggests that the Duke is unable to assume control of a number of things including; firstly, his speech, his emotions and also, the control of his previous Duchess. The line is indicative of power that she has over him to cause significant turmoil in his mind and implies that the only way that he is able to fully assert his power over her is in her…

In the Victorian era, expectations were placed on women. This particular mindset regarding a woman’s place in society is devastatingly depicted in both “The Lady of Shalott” and “My Last Duchess.” Both the Lady and the Duchess yearned for a more fulfilling life, but Victorian expectations limited that fulfillment. The Duchess, who lived spontaneously, ultimately faced her death because she would not comply with her husband’s unspoken desires as well as the cultural norm. However, the Lady, who yearned for a passionate and loving partner, attempts to break the mold of the Victorian mindset and in doing so, she faces her death as well.…

The poem “Porphyria’s Lover” by Robert Browning was written in 1836. Although the poem was written so long ago, it is known to be a very dramatic and ironic poem due to the speaker’s theme of obsession. In Uma Kukathas’s ‘Critical Essay on “Porphyria’s Lover”’ it is stated and agreed upon that “"Porphyria 's Lover," is a poem in which a madman recounts to himself the events of the night before that end with his murdering the woman he loves.” (Kutkathas, Critical Essay on.). Throughout the poem there are multiple aspects that have a major impact on the theme such as the poets’ use of syntax and diction in the dramatic monolog, the speaker’s borderline personality disorder, and the tone the speaker uses towards his obsession of Porphyria.…

There are three elements which thematically link Robert Browning’s My Last Duchess and Prospice: love, marriage and death. Both poems follow the aftermath of a marriage brought to an end by the death of the wife. In order to comprehend the psyches of the husbands and the manners in which they cope with their partners deaths, a close analysis of their dramatic monologues is required, for it may reveal discrepancies between their words and thoughts. My Last Duchess follows a duke, implied to be the duke of Ferrara by the fact that the Italian city is named at the beginning of the poem, showing a painting of his previous wife to an emissary sent by a count in order to negotiate the duke’s upcoming marriage with her daughter.…
