Many schools have banned chocolate milk in effort to reduce the amount of sugar in students’ diets, while others are facing heavy pressure to rid themselves of the flavored milk as well. The main reason for these bans has to do with the spike in child obesity over the last decade, and many critics are arguing that obesity is related to having chocolate milk at lunch. Others argue that chocolate milk has more health benefits than regular milk, while many agree that the amount of sugar in flavored milk is miniscule compared to a can of soda. Schools should keep chocolate milk as a lunch option because it encourages quicker recovery after working out, is just as nutritional as regular milk and getting rid of it decreases milk consumption. While white milk tends to encourage the growth of healthy bones, chocolate milk does much more by recovering muscles. Chocolate milk is well-known for recovering athletes after hardcore workouts and such a benefit will certainly help students with physical educational classes be more fit. While being a sports drink, chocolate milk is just as healthy for students as white milk, with extra bonuses like a liver detoxifying agent. Despite these wonderful and proven benefits, schools that ban chocolate milk tend to see a consumption drop in white milk, which can lead to health complications in the future. To attempt to stop this problem, schools could at least offer both types of milk and maybe even other juice-like drinks.
