Kayla Delzer: A Change In The Classroom

Take a look at a typical elementary classroom, there are blank walls, straight rows of desks, and the teacher's podium is place at the front of the room to show ownership or authority. That is it. Now take a look at a 20th century schoolhouse classroom. It has the same basic feel to it as the classroom from today has. With the changing of our culture and technologies, there needs to be a change in our classroom settings as well. The room should be fun and inviting with bright colored walls and eccentric designs. There should be posters and pictures, fun looking chairs, and bookshelves with more books than one could ever read. Computers should line the walls along with a smart board and a projector. The teacher's desk should sit at the back …show more content…
“Computers, when used for the right purposes, can make a big difference” (Kleinman). Kayla Delzer, a teacher from West Fargo, has been, what she calls, “reinventing her classroom”. Her design allows students to be the leaders while she is the learner. She says “ When the students are in control of their learning, it makes it very relevant to them. Embrace their knowledge and they will embrace their learning”. In the classroom, Delzer uses things like apps, online voice recorders, and IPads to manage her classroom. In a Ted Talk done by Delzer in 2015, she told the audience to “Embrace PURPOSEFUL technology. If the same project can be done using a pencil and paper, it is not transforming your classroom”. If a boring article is put onto a computer screen, it is still going to be the same boring article. We need to use technology to reinvent the classroom with new ideas and creativity. Apps that are project based, encourage students to go out and be creative with their learning, while still using the IPad as a tool to help them. Teachers need to find a way to combine the two in order to be successful. Delzer also uses an app named Audioboom to enhance the student, leader,

In her iPod experiment, Davidson worked with colleagues and Duke students to modernize the traditional, standardized classroom educational paradigm. Davidson describes one of experiment’s objective, “it was also an investment in student-led curiosity … interactivity, crowdsourcing, customizing, and inspired inquiry-driven problem solving. At our most ambitious, we hoped to change the one-directional model of attention” (54). By effectively executing the iPod experiment challenge, Davidson initiated social change and successfully equipped students with competencies necessary in the 21st Century digitally centered workforce. Furthermore, in this example the technology and the collective efforts to implement it into the Duke classrooms can be classified as social change by challenging the status quo of how to teach and what to teach students; this experiment helped pave way for a new educational paradigm shift away from standardization and towards digital student lead…

At the turn of the digital era, it is crucial for the educational system to acclimate and prepare students for new progressive career opportunities. In Cathy Davidson’s essay, “Project Classroom Makeover,” the use of personal, professional, and cultural anecdotes are used to strengthen her argument for the use of more innovative, collaborative, and technological teaching methods in the classroom. Davidson’s relevant organization and incorporation of the Duke iPod experiment and United States job market and educational history illustrate the need for educational renovation and greatly advance her claims. However, the second half of her essay complicates her main argument for digitalization and instead focuses on the need to replace the dehumanizing standardization of education and combining play into the classroom by focusing on children whose talents fall outside of the system’s norms and her mother-in-law’s outdated teaching methods. Davidson and other esteemed…

The article explores a study conducted to see what teachers choose to do to conduct their classes when they have no restrictions and limits, specifically in terms of technology. The study showed that despite the freedom to choose the tool of choice, teachers stuck with power points, which are the most basic “old school” way of teaching a class. Savasci concludes after the study that teachers must increase their “ knowledge and skills about how to use those instructional technologies and help them develop positive attitudes toward information and communication technologies”. This illustrates Cahn and Cahn’s sub-claim that schools and their teachers should branch out to innovative technologies for their students. The intended audience seems to be the generation older than the millennials given the subject and context of the study is very factual, but can definitely be intended for millennials as well because the language used is not difficult relative to other academic studies conducted.…

This probably sounds more like a jail cell than a classroom. An ideal classroom for a student to be successful should be bright and open to encourage proper learning. The more colorful the classroom is, the child will engage more often. Having a classroom with bright colors can make the child feel proud of being in school, and in return they will feel proud and succeed in the setting. An example I use is a nursery.…

Students in this generation are known as digital natives because they have grown up with technology within their lives and are able to manipulate it well (Coviello, 2013). Technology is a great additive within every classroom because it can be manipulated to include every student in the classroom as well as the teacher. Technology can be arranged to fit any lesson plan and can also improve engagement because it something that children use on the daily basis within their homes. Being able to manipulate technology in school helps to boost motivation within students who are used to manipulating technology outside of the classroom. The classroom arrangement that best fits this method is one that a future teacher can and will be using within their own classroom.…

Digital technology within the elementary school classroom is something that as of lately has started to become to be an increasingly large focus within the field of digital sociology. This could be for many reasons. To begin, the introduction of technology and technological aides has started to begin at a much earlier age in the year 2015 than it has ever before. Looking back twenty years ago, classrooms (especially elementary school classrooms) were lucky if they had two or more desktop computers within the confines of their classroom. In today’s society and the world of education, it is uncommon to see less than four desktop computers per classroom at the complete bare minimum.…

The environment of a classroom is a very important factor in a child’s education and should include a variety of centers, equipment, and space. Ideally the classroom will provide the students with different learning tools and stimuli in an area that does not feel overcrowded or cluttered. Children should be provided with an environment that is not over crowded with too many students and not enough resources- something that can be difficult in certain school systems. Overall the indoor environment for learning is one of the most important aspects of a child’s educational experience. The class observed in this paper was located in Elon Elementary School.…
