“Katniss Everdeen, the girl who was on fire burns on (p.105 ).” In the Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne learn that love is more complicated that simple friendship. Katniss was lost in between who to choose to help her keep going. Gale on the other side was always thinking that he did not stand a chance with Katniss. But towards the end, Katniss figures out that she needs Peeta to help her move forward in life. Those are some of the ways Katniss and Gale learned that love is more complicated than simple friendship.

Gale thinks this way because Katniss only kisses him when he is in pain or feeling down. He realized that she never kissed him like lovers do and that affected him. However, he saw her kissing Peeta many times and always thought that she meant it. Also, Peeta sacrificed himself to warn Katniss and was hijacked as a result, with that Gale knew that Peeta loved Katniss to the point that he sacrificed himself for her while he did nothing to keep Katniss out of harm's way. With that, he realized that love is more complicated than simple friendship.
