In The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the main character, Katniss Everdeen is a young girl who holds the weight of her family on her back. When she was eleven, Katniss’s father died in a coal mining accident. She was left to provide and protect for her young sister and heartbroken mother. To do this, Katniss learns to hunt alongside a boy from her district, Gale Hawthrone. Together they illegally cross the fence every day to hunt and gather in the vast woods outside. Katniss becomes especially skilled with a bow. Katniss’s home country, Panem, is divided into twelve districts and the Capitol. Every district provides a specific need for the country. For example, Katniss’s home district, District 12, provides coal for the entire country. …show more content…
She talks to her mother and sister who are terrified for her. She speaks with Gale who promises to take care of her family. Katniss’s friend from school visits her. Madge, her friend, gives her a gold pin for good luck. The pin is a mockingjay.
Soon Katniss is hurried away to the capitol, where capitol workers begin to give her a new look. She is introduced to her stylist Cinna, with whom she starts to build a friendship. Cinna begins to prepare her for the opening ceremony that evening. The audience is awed when Katniss and Peeta outfits seem to be radiating fire. This is how Katniss gets her nickname “Girl on Fire”.
The tributes begin training the next day. Haymitch advises Katniss and Peeta to keep their talents hidden, Katniss’s being archery and Peeta’s is strength. They continue training until their private sessions with the Gamemakers, who give Katniss an 11 out of 12, a very impressive score.
The night before the games begin, the tributes are interview by the host of the Hunger Games, Caesar Flickerman. In his interview, Peeta reveals to Caesar that he has had a long time crush on Katniss, making them appear as star-crossed lovers. At first Katniss is angry until Haymitch convinces her that it is a good game
