In The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the main character, Katniss Everdeen is a young girl who holds the weight of her family on her back. When she was eleven, Katniss’s father died in a coal mining accident. She was left to provide and protect for her young sister and heartbroken mother. To do this, Katniss learns to hunt alongside a boy from her district, Gale Hawthrone. Together they illegally cross the fence every day to hunt and gather in the vast woods outside. Katniss becomes especially skilled with a bow. Katniss’s home country, Panem, is divided into twelve districts and the Capitol. Every district provides a specific need for the country. For example, Katniss’s home district, District 12, provides coal for the entire country.

The tributes begin training the next day. Haymitch advises Katniss and Peeta to keep their talents hidden, Katniss’s being archery and Peeta’s is strength. They continue training until their private sessions with the Gamemakers, who give Katniss an 11 out of 12, a very impressive score.

In his interview, Peeta reveals to Caesar that he has had a long time crush on Katniss, making them appear as star-crossed lovers.
