Katniss Everdeen: A True Hero

“The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “The Odyssey” by Robert Fitzgerald provide their readers with a character that is the embodiment of a perfect hero. Katniss Everdeen and Odysseus both portray loyal, brave, and responsible heroes who endure many hardships, and survive them however, the challenges that the contemporary character, Katniss Everdeen, faces before and during the Hunger Games along with her rewards after she returns are dissimilar from the ancient Greek hero Odysseus’ obstacles on his journey home and his accomplishments after he returns to Ithica, which illuminates the fact that a common girl like Katniss Everdeen is the epitome of a hero in our generation. Since Katniss Everdeen won the Hunger Games, she was gifted a plethora of food and treasures, and promised a life of luxury with no worries about competing in the Hunger Games again. Katniss receives an immense amount of money that she decides to distribute to others within her district. Most importantly the capitol allowed Katniss Everdeen to live and see her family again after all the pain and torture that she encountered. Odysseus was rewarded with the return to his island after twenty years. After the return, Odysseus sees his wife and son who do not believe in his heroic return back to Ithica (16.71). Argos, Odysseus’ dog, waited for him to return and even tried “,... to wag his tail…” but Argos had no strength. After Argos heard Odysseus’ voice one last time, he passed away (17.15). Odysseus reclaims his throne on the island of Ithica and realizes who his loyal friends are after all of those years (23.1).
“The Hunger Games” and “The Odyssey” both provide courageous characters in Katniss Everdeen and Odysseus which show the characteristics of great heroes in modern times and ancient times. Although Odysseus shows great heroic qualities such as responsibility, bravery, and loyalty, Katniss Everdeen personifies the ideal archetype of a perfect humble hero who is summoned to the Hunger Games and comes back to district twelve
