The reader learns so much about Katniss due to the book being in first person. Some of Katniss’ major characteristics are brave, independent, and protective. Being brave is a difficult task to accomplish, but Katniss Everdeen nails it. One example of Katniss showing her bravery is when Katniss volunteers as tribute for her sister (page 25). Katniss is aware that she will most likely die in the arena but she would sacrifice herself for her younger sister, Prim. Another example of Katniss’ bravery is when she wore flames on her back as she when into the opening ceremony chariots (page 77). Flames are very dangerous and Katniss knew that if she wore the flames she would have a better chance of winning the games. One last example was Katniss challenging the Capitol by almost eating the berries (page 403). Katniss challenged the only form of government she has ever known even though she could get killed on the spot. Bravery is a very important part of Katniss’ character. …show more content…

Katniss’ father died in a mine explosion and her mother went out of the loop and couldn’t take care of Katniss and Prim. Katniss went into action and started hunting and finding food for her family when she was very young (Beginning of book). While Hercules faces legitimate mythical monsters such as Hera, madness, the Hyrda, and Cerberus, Katniss faces more human monsters, such as President Snow, Cato, President Coin, and PTSD. Katniss faces all her trials at once, while Hercules faces them over several years; Katniss's overall trial is fighting for her life. She does everything she has to in order to survive, jumping through every hoop thrown at her by the Capitol, until she comes to a happy ending at the end of Mockingjay.…

Throughout the book, her intelligence is exemplified with her awareness of surveillance. First, Katniss was conscious of the cameras as soon as she volunteered to take Prim’s place. Kelley Wezner says, “… Katniss equates the cameras with self-control as she struggles to contain her tears so that she will not look weak to competitors during the evening of replays of her district’s reaping” (154). I believe Katniss was smart to hold back her emotions because if she didn’t she would have looked like an easy target to the other tributes and I also believe her ability to control her emotions at such a problematic time showed her mental strength and possibly helped her gain sponsors. The second example is during the first night in the games when Katniss is hiding out in a tree and she finds out Peeta is working with the careers.…

Whether it’s being a hero in a movie, or a sacrifice from a small village, these are two things that Katniss Everdeen and Tess Hutchinson had to endure throughout their life. The life that these two characters lived are what formed them into who they are in their story.
