Agencies are there to help a person figure out if adopting is right for them, which is why finding the right agency is a very big factor in this process. There are public and private agencies to choose from. Public agencies are not going to put as much time into trying to match the right child with the right parents. Nicole Witt says that “smaller agencies don’t make that investment and therefore cost less but also have fewer babies to place” in the article “The Cost of Adoption” by Geoff Williams. Some of these agencies actually base the cost of a person’s income, so if a person is getting a lower income than another person they are not going to be paying the same amount they are going to be paying less (Bahr). An adoption on average can take from four months to four years for the whole process to be completed. There is a lot of time that has to be put into it from researching about adoption, actually applying, getting accepting, finding a child, and getting them to their parents. The amount of time all depends on the situation each adoptive parent has. A child can stay in foster care for 12 months before they even get to their adoptive parents (Ledesma). There are also some things that can happen that take up a lot of unexpected time and money. Jennifer Hefner says the her “birth mother thought she was in labor three weeks before she actually was, so we had well over a month of hotel expenses, food, and gas.” She did not expect this and had to spend a lot more money then she thought. The thought of this happening will scare some people, but the outcome is one of the best things that can happen in a person’s life. A woman said that she blew through 15,000 using private agencies (Crary). The agencies were no help to her. They agency that she used could not find her a child and she decided to switch
