Katherine Mansfield's Miss Brill

In Katherine Mansfield’s short story “Miss Brill” the main character feels like “Life is like a play.” Every Sunday she goes to Jardins Publiques, but on one particular Sunday it hits her that it is all like a play and she is just one of the many actors/actresses. From the band playing along and the same people showing up to many little aspects that Miss Brill pulls together to explain why it is like a play. Every Sunday of the year the band plays in Jardins Publiques. On this particular day Miss Brill sensed that they were playing music to correspond with what was happening in the park. When the gentleman in grey walked away from the beautiful woman they seemed to play softer and more tenderly. Additionally when the beautiful woman saw someone else and pattered away they began playing quickly and more happily once again. It just like in a play when music is being played in the background to help the actors betray a certain tone or feeling.
