Katherine johnson was born on August 26, 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Katherine johnson is an African American physicist mathematician who made contributions to the United States aeronautics space program with the early application of digital electronic computers at NASA. Katherine Johnson loves to count, she love to count steps to the road, the steps up to church, and the numbers of silverware and dishes she washed. At a young age she was very excited to go to school, when she was young she could remember all her siblings going to school and wishing she could go with them. The opportunity to go to school finally came around and she began her studies in the second grade. By the age of 10 she moved to advanced classes in highschool.

Miss Turner taught geometry and she was so excited to go to her class everyday. Miss turner encouraged her students and was a strong mentor to most of the students. Katherine johnson did so well in all her classes, she graduated early from high school, and at the age of 15 she attended West Virginia State College. She had 2 years to choose a major in college, she was stuck between three choices; English, French, or Mathematics. One of her professors helped her choose between the three choices. Katherine ended up with going with what she knew best,
