Katherine Heavers Recommendation

Dear Global Teacher Prize Academy Committee,
I am very pleased to recommend Dr. Katherine Heavers for the Global Teacher Prize. I was a 12th grade student in her class from 2014 to 2015. The course was called Human Anatomy and Physiology, but that name does not do everything she taught me justice. In her classes, she sets aside five to ten minutes for students in one of the most competitive N.J. schools to relax with yoga techniques. Reinvigorated, students listen to a quote from Dr. Heavers and relax for a minute of peace, possibly the only minute of silence besides sleeping that the students get all day. For the rest of the class period, she focuses on both biology and the character traits like integrity and tolerance. The great depth of

Dr. Heavers integrates positive psychology techniques, which have been shown to improve student health and performance, into her classes. She treats all students as individuals instead of as one unit. She helps any student who needs it, whether with academics or personal struggles. Her joyful smiles, which have brightened countless days for me, are given to any student in need and are as valuable as the biology she teachers. Dr. Heavers has taught ESL classes; she treated ESL students with the same contagious energy and level of respect that she brings to other classes. When she set up a trip to the Bodies museum in NYC, she invited any students to go because she believed that all students should learn about the body. She was also willing to pay the fee for the disadvantaged students who could not afford the …show more content…
Each year, members of the community gather at the HAPpy Museum, a night full of exhibits by Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) students. The exhibits show how beautiful and delicate the human body is. Instead of making it another assignment, Dr. Heavers encouraged students like myself to “curate” the museum and gain both valuable education and valuable leadership experience. The students connected with prominent community figures, advertised the museum, and ran the event. Presenting and enriching the information changed me more than reading the information out of a textbook would have. The museum made many in the community to reconsider their own treatment of their

It is a great pleasure to recommend Rachel Sitasz for admission to the Edward Hospital Student Volunteer Program. She is one of the most empathetic, kind, and exceptional humans I have encountered in my 14 years of teaching. I teach Rachel in my 8th grade advanced ELA class. Her academics, character, innate curiosity, intrinsic motivation, ethical standards, and unwavering desire to give back, have put Rachel in a class of her own. In fact, for the first time in over 25+ years, the eighth-grade team created a brand new end-of-the-year award for our graduation awards assembly.…

Ever since the 9th grade I had finally decided to become an Athletic Trainer. An Athletic Trainer to me is just a permanent water girl. It does have a label but everyone has always told me “You’re just going to stay a water girl forever aren’t you?” But an Athletic Trainer is a healthcare professional that collaborates with a physician. Ever since I became a water girl I knew I had to do something with sports.…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

Duncan argues that this is what binds a community together by in a civic body through identification of its highest values, its truest truths and proudest moments. It is through this way that museums achieve a ritual quality that is usually associated with certain religious institutions. In addition to sometimes mimicking the architecture of classic temples, Duncan suggests that museums work like shrines or temples. She is of the opinion that when visitors arrive at a museum, they have certain expectations as well as willingness to learn and compensate. Museum’s spaces are marked as special in a way that they require a certain degree of contemplation, just like religious spaces.…

Good practice in teaching and learning in PSHE This piece of writing will address good practice in teaching and learning in the subject of PSHE, whilst referencing how we can create a sensitive and empathetic classroom environment where everyone's ideas are welcomed. “The buildings are destroyed, people lost their house and clothes, and to make it worse, there is barely any food and clean water to sustain themselves,” said Pastor Henry. Hurricane Irma took more than 60 people lives including nine children. The storm snapped trees like twigs and swept away houses like straw. The debris pollute the water and block the roads. The survivors live under emergency shelters made from a pieces of roofing iron they salvaged, and the feed themselves with food scraps they can scavenged.…

Traditionally, museums are considered secular sites in which curators display art objectively; however, in her work, “The art museum as ritual,” Carol Duncan examines how museums act as powerful entities which influence the visitors’ perception through the display, organization, and architecture of the space. She elaborates that the museum’s authority actually enables them to represent and define entire communities, which consequently shapes the visitors’ perceptions of said communities. Perhaps Duncan’s claim is best summarized as: “To control a museum means precisely to control the representations of a community and its highest values and truths… What we see and do not see in … museums and on what terms and by whose authority we do or do…

My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life.…

Sarita Prabhu Ms. Brask Honors English II October 10, 2014 TITLE Teenagers often acquire seven hours of sleep each night when they should be getting at least nine. This is due to numerous reasons, some being the average afterschool workload being too heavy, and the after school activities such as sports or clubs being too demanding. Or are the start times for school simply too early? With students balancing homework, extracurriculars, jobs and the effects of a growing body, Glenwood High School’s start time needs to be delayed to 8:40 a.m. to allow students to get more sleep.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
