As a child, Katherine Goble Johnson loved numbers. She counted everything she could. Her parents encouraged her math skills. Katherine started college when she was only 15 years old.

In the early 1950s, Katherine took a job at the Langley Laboratory. There, she worked with engineers as a computer. At this time, "computer" was the name given to people who did math calculations. Katherine worked out math about airplanes.

The United States began a space program later in the 1950s. Langley Lab became part of the American space agency called NASA. Katherine began helping people travel to space.

Katherine worked on calculations for astronaut Alan Shepard. He was the very first American in space. A few years later, Katherine checked calculations
