In “Birthday Party” Katherine Bush describes an event; better yet, an occasion where one was not pleased with the actions of his fellow spouse. In the particular relationship, the wife & the husband went out for dinner and at the end of their lovely dinner, the wife planned a surprise. To explain the surprise or the outcome of it, Bush uses an abundant amount of literary devices. Bush uses a literary device to reveal the setting of this surprise. By utilizing imagery, she provides the reader to picture the setting or, to see the event for themselves. Bush explains the setting, “They sat on the banquette opposite us in a little narrow restaurant, having dinner.” This highlights the look of the restaurant and how it is set up. In addition with the cake, the wife of this man hired a band to play a special tune. “…meanwhile the violin-and-piano orchestra played ‘Happy birthday to you” This piece includes the device repetition as the orchestra repeats the words “Happy Birthday to you” This man, who doesn’t like surprises, has to listen over and over again those words. Furthermore, because of the events that are happening, the man is displeased. “He was hotly embarrassed, and indignant at his wife for embarrassing him.” This is where the shift takes place, as the mood begins as a great, pleasant one, and ends in a mean unpleasant one. The man looks displeased and is not happy with the “surprise” his wife has done for him. Instead of a surprise, the man took it has an insult as he had the thought that his wife attempted to embarrass him in front of many people. Hence, if that was the case, the wife was successful. “Birthday Party” features a married couple who goes to a restaurant to celebrate one’s birthday. In an attempt to celebrate the occasion, disaster happens. As it turns out that the person who was suppose to be happy, celebrate and enjoy the moment, ended up hating and disliking the moment.
