Katherine Anne Porter’s main character, Granny Weatherall, is an old woman near the end of her life. She has undergone hardships including an emotional breakup and the loss of a child. Granny Weatherall is confused, untrusting, and spiteful. By the end of her life, Granny Weatherall is confused. Granny Weatherall has lived a long life filled with many events. She now confuses her past with the present. [“But there was Hapsy standing by the bed in a white cap. ‘Cornelia, tell Hapsy to take off her cap. I can’t see her plain.’”] She believes that from day to day there are many tasks for her to do and that she can do them. She believes that time is passing much differently than it is. Granny Weatherall also confuses which of her children is which. She believes that Hapsy is actually alive and within reach, and that George is still near her. She believes that she is in perfect health and that the visits by the doctor are unnecessary. Granny Weatherall is confused about most of the aspects of her life. …show more content…
In her old age, she mistrusts everyone. She does not trust that the doctor can help her. [“Leave a well woman alone. I’ll call for you when I want you.”] She believes that her daughter, Cornelia, is only trying to control her. Granny Weatherall only trusts her youngest child, Hapsy. She trusted herself earlier in life to get things done, and she continues to only trust herself as death nears. This could be why she did not trust the priest. [“She had her secret comfortable understanding with a few favorite saints who cleared a straight road to God for her.”] She had already put her faith in the saints that she trusted.
