Media: Kathe Kollwitz has used heavy, tough granite for this sculpture. This artwork is 3-Dimensional, and is about life size. Granite is a very hard and heavy stone, and with the lady having her back hunched over, it makes it look like she’s got all that weight on her shoulders from despair, and her mourning over her son’s death. What you would usually use to make sculpture to start off with is the simple hammer and chisel. As you can see that what Kollwitz has done. The impact of the media and processes, is that it shows grief and despair with how one of the bodies are slouched, and both of them are on their knees, looking cold, and clinging on to their own bodies with their arms. How she also used a hard material for this sculpture, and how it’s not shiny either, also shows the viewers how deep and gloomy it is, and it visualizes the scene especially Kollwitz and her husband grieving over their son and it brings emotions not only for the artist, but also for the viewers.
