Kate's Devotion To Her Son Quotes

Improved Essays
Kate’s determination to believe that her son, Larry, is still alive is mentioned many other times by characters long before Kate has even set foot onto the stage: ‘How will she react?’ [Upon seeing the tree has been blown down]’, ‘Chris: She’s been dreaming about him again.’’ Kate is convinced that Larry will simply walk through the door one day and is so desperate that she commissions a very unreliable horoscope to find out if Larry was reported missing on his ‘favourable day’, something that only serves to heighten Kate’s denial.

The writing style of Mary Lawson appears to revolve around understanding the characters. The story to this point is focused by the characters experiencing their conflicts, and relationships with one another being affected by the reactions to the struggle. Mary is very descriptive about the battles the family goes through without parents, and attempts to make the issues very realistic with lifelike characters. When Kate and Bo saw their brothers fighting Kate describes Bo’s reaction as, “ I looked down and saw Bo shaking so that even her hair seemed to vibrate. She’d gone rigid, her arms sticking down stiffly at her sides, fingers spread, and her mouth was open wide and tears were pouring down her face…

Sister Aloysius is the principal of the St. Nicholas school. She is stern, suspicious, and cynical, making a point of showing the students no weakness and discouraging signs of weakness in the nuns under her. When she is first introduced, her suspicious nature seems excessive: she suspects a boy who went home with a nosebleed of having intentionally inflicted it himself, and she feels that ballpoint pens, as opposed to fountain pens, offer students the easy way out. Her dour attitude makes her unsympathetic, and audiences are left to wonder whether, as Father Flynn and Sister James speculate at different times, she is suspicious of Father Flynn only because she personally dislikes his compassionate…

Whether they are good influences or bad, there is a strong correlation between the character of a person and the type of people by which they are influenced. Civil right’s movements often cause a variety of strong and influential leaders to come to light. Florence Kelley was a strong and influential leader during the Women’s Civil Rights movement; she spoke at the National American Women’s Suffrage Association in 1905 to persuade in favor of change for the greater and common good. In her speech, Kelley utilizes pathos, anaphora, and connotative diction to convey her claim that the injustices of child labor can be reformed by women attaining political power (such as the right to vote) and that it is their moral obligation to do so. Throughout her entire speech, Kelley applies pathos to inspire sympathy, feelings of guilt , and appeal to maternal instincts.…

To many a mother’s love is an unconditional and an irreplaceable act of kindness. This love is seen to be a guide to growth and a love that helps to shape young children into well rounded adults. Throughout Jamaica Kincaid’s memoir, My Brother, her mom tends to show affection only in times of need when someone is down and does not really provide the leadership most mothers give. Most of the memoir is about intimacy, but a lot it deals with the relationships between mother and her children. Kincaid claims that the love her mother would give would not always be the best for them…

“Three Little Words” is a memoir that shares the story of a girl named Ashley Rhodes-Courter, who spent 10 years in the foster care system. Ashley and her younger brother, Luke, were removed from their birth mother, Lorraine, when Ashley was only 3 years old. She was placed in 14 different homes before she had a permanent address. There was a lot that could be absorbed from Ashley’s story, but one thing that stood out to me is how heavily childhood experiences impacted the lives of many characters in this book. In the late 1960s, John Bowlby proposed his theory of attachment.…
