Kate The Shrew

People are willing to change for those that they love. In some instances it is how they act or what they do or in other instances it is how people change their beliefs and sometimes their physical appearance. In this case Kate is willing to change for someone she loves. Kate was being a shrew for multiple reasons. First of all no one really loved her or even talked to her, they always thought she was to mean and wouldn’t give them a chance. Also Baptista, Kate’s father favored Bianca way more than her and mainly looked out for Bianca. He didn’t really care about Kate’s feelings but only Biancas. Another reason Kate was being so shrewish was because she was humiliated. Petruchio showed up disgusting and acted like he didn’t care to there …show more content…
She did what he told her to do even if she didn’t like it, for example she didn’t eat after the wedding and even though he treated her awful she did what she was told. Also in the “game” the men were having to see who could come first, Kate was the one that came first. After she won she gave a long speech on treating your husbands with respect all because Petruchio told her to.

In my opinion Kate does love Petruchio. She wouldn’t had listened to him through all the annoying and awful things he said to her unless she had a little respect and liked him. She also could have just ran off when she had the chance but she stayed with Petruchio. Also she kisses Petruchio in the middle of public which is pretty big and a big step in a relationship. No one kisses each other unless they have feelings for eachother and Kate kissed Petruchio and he didn’t force her to do it. He just told her to and she did which also means she wanted to and she obeys him proving she loves him.

Based on my points that Kate was tamed by Petruchio, she loves him, and the reasons she was a shrew it proves that she is willing to change for someone that she loves. At first she was a shrew and no one wanted to talk to her and she was a very rude person but towards the end of the book Petruchio tamed her and she began to obey and she was very nice and very

Contrasting this, in The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine have no choice but to stay together. It may be argued that by the end of The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Katherine have developed feelings for one another; yet, despite this, they stay together because the ties of marriage bind them. If given the opportunity to dissolve their union with no monetary or social consequences—the same opportunity that faces Patrick and Kat—it would be feasible that they would separate. This differs from the end of Ten Things I Hate About You where Patrick and Kat reconcile, clearly choosing to remain a couple as they deeply care for one another, not because they stand to gain anything from reconciling. They are not legally bound to one another, nor do they financially support each other—it is their choice to stay together due to their mutual affection.…

She won’t stand for her father’s favoritism of her sister, she won’t marry a man just for her sister’s benefit, and she refuses to, “... lead apes into Hell” (1.2 ln 34). Not only is she vehemently determined to not let herself be taken advantage of by her situation, but Kate also has wits that are capable of matching those of the usually dominating males. When she first meets Petruchio, her eventual husband, their back and forth is quick, witty, and a warning to Petruchio to, “...beware of [Kate’s] sting” (2.1 ln 210). This exhibited women as being just as educated and smart as men, which was not the societal connotation associated with women during Shakespeare’s time. Even though many of Kate’s action and her personality is criticized by other characters, specifically the men trying to woo her younger sister, Shakespeare develops Katherina in this way in order to visualize a woman who is not content to conform to the societal roles…

He states “This is a way to kill a wife with kindness, And thus I’ll curb her mad and headstrong humor.” Petruchio is saying that by depriving her of food and sleep, and saying that it is out of love, he will eventually tame her and make her into the “impeccable” wife she was meant to be. Shakespeare clearly shaped the character of Petruchio and his attitudes toward both women and the roles of husband and wife in marriage so that Petruchio would be able to suppress the character of Katherina and to make her into what he saw as the perfect wife. With the taming of the shrew Shakespeare seems to be through the comedy of the play commenting on the woman’s role in Elizabethan England by portraying it to an extreme, he seems to be in a way commenting on the hypocrisy of women being seen as subservient to men even though the country at the time was ruled by a woman. This is first portrayed, as many of The Taming of the Shrews themes are, in the induction as one way in which Shakespeare refers to male dominance and courtship is through the relationship between Sly and the Page. Here we see the Page saying to Sly “I am your wife in all obedience” showing his submissive nature as this male character refers to himself as “wife” as he intends to show him all the respect a superior figure deserves. He is taking the role of an ideal, obeying wife for the men of the times and an opposite of Katherina’s original character, the Page is similar to the role of the tamed Katherina.…
