As Mrs. Mallard received the “possible news of her husband’s death” her initial reaction was a state of shock when stating “paralyzed inability to accept significance.” As she received the news she was indeed shocked and sad. Within a few minutes she felt physically exhausted. This indicates that her husband had full control over her. When Kate Chopin states “There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy chair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul. “indicates that she was mentally and emotionally controlled by her husband. Moments after Mrs. Mallard being physically exhausted she later developed positive energy which leads to her wanting to start a “new spring life”. As Mrs. Mallard breathes in the “delicious breath of rain” that was “in the air” is a sign of clarity and being able to start her new spring life. The “new spring life” occurs when “there were patches of blue sky”, “birds singing”, and she develops a joyous feeling as well as looking forward to a long life. Unhappy marriages can lead to separation if one of the spouse or both of the spouse are unhappy and wants to move on with their life. In short, Mrs. Mallard was living her life for her husband, after her husband’s death she then discovers freedom, and after discovering freedom she then became eager to start a new life and being free. The “Story of an Hour” illustrates the idea of unhappy marriages causing separation and it reveals that most unhappy marriages are caused by living your life for someone else instead of yourself.
