"The Storm" is a short fiction by Kate Chopin, and it is focused on how the setting-time, place, weather-of the story affects its theme. It takes place in the south region of the United States (Louisiana) and it is developed while a storm is passing by; being this, the theme or center of the story. The storm(climatic) symbolizes the lives of the characters - Calixta, Alcée, Bobinot, Bibi and Alcée's wife- their struggles within themselves and their families, their affairs, and past events in Calixta's and Alcée's life. Also, it is used as a liason between their families. Their unfaithfullness to their spouses-the storm in their lives-is what both of the families have in common. There, Alcée represents the cloud of the 'storm' - the affair between him and Calixta. Also, her disturbed mood and the lighting and bolt that struck outside epitomizes the feelings she's having for being with her past lover in her house alone-the storm within herself. Consequently, when Chopin states "They did not heed.." this scene symbolizes that they are in the storm, laying together in the sofa of Calixta's living room, making love. Not only in these moments the storm is illustrated but also when the end of the story is approaching. The scenes, "The growl of thunder was distant and passing away.." and "The rain was over and the sun was turning the glistening world into a palace of gems.." indicate that the storm is gone outside and inside the house. Alcée's and Calixta's passionate encounter is over and everything went back to normal: Calixta making supper and setting the table, Alcée writing to his wife and Bobinot and his son coming back
