Adultery: Okay or Not? The “Storm” by Kate Chopin, I believe is the most controversial and interesting reading of all of them. In short, this story shows what happens when two old lovers meet alone when the weather is brewing a storm. The “Storm” is based upon five main characters, Bobinot and Calixta (husband and wife), their son, Bibi, Alcee and Clarisse (husband and wife). Bobinot and Bibi were out at the supermarket when the weather started to take a turn for the worse, indicative of a storm rolling in. They decided to stay at the supermarket until the storm passed and then head back home. Being together again after a long time without anyone being there, the circumstances changed and both became overwhelmed. The weather outside was becoming worse but inside the house it was getting warm and steamy. Both Alcee and Calixta rekindled their past relationship and made passionate love. Once the storm outside stopped, Alcee left the house and Calixta was watching him leave. Bobinot and Bibi returned home safe and sound from the supermarket, Calixta was relieved. Both Calixta and Alcee went on with their joyful lives without any regard to what occurred during the storm. The title “Storm” in this reading has a double-meaning. The first meaning is the very obvious one, regarding the weather and the storm that mother nature is brewing up. The second meaning takes a little bit of thinking, more abstract. This is the storm that is fermenting between Calixta and Alcee internally. The author, Kate Chopin, uses the title very cleverly and presents the background of the story using a storm (weather). Did both of them have any regrets? Did they tell anyone of what happened? Chopin should have continued the story and not left off where she did in actuality. One can speculate that both, Calixta and Alcee, did not mention any of this to either one of their spouses; they are in sense keeping it a secret. Sooner or later this secret might come out and both their lives will go into chaos. In today’s time and era this is called cheating on your spouse or having an illegitimate relationship. One of two things should have happened: 1. Both Calixta and Alcee should have kept their distance and never should have rekindled their old relationship. 2. Both Calixta and Alcee should have come out clean with their spouses and told them what happened and dealt with the consequences. What these two, Calixta and Alcee, did was something that is unforgivable especially since they are married and not to mention have children.
